What a terrific and worthwhile exercise this truly is!! Due to incapacity I will not be able to attend, however this does not stop me from wishing everyone well in their endeavours. It is just so terribly sad to see the state of some of our burial grounds and one struggles to find the real reason. Where the cemetery is a municipal one surely then the general rates should afford some income to the maintenance budget to keep the area in something like decent shape! Where the cemetery is a "single"faith one then the church (or relevant body) must have some input to keep the area something like decent. When I am taken to Southern Cemetery or to Gorton Cemetery (to my eldest son) I am impressed with the overall effect and can visually appreciate the effort that goes in. However when I am taken to Moston Cemetery, (to my Maternal family), I am, quite frankly, appalled at the condition of the place and I recognise that a massive injection of funds is required to bring it up to standard and therein lies the rub! Where should that come from? We do of course know the answer to that question, but will it? Anyway good luck to all taking part in the Manchester General Cemetery project! Bill
