Hi all,

There was also a nice piece with pics  :D  in the NE Manchester Advertiser on
8 Dec 2011.  We have only just got copies thanks to a resident who had saved us a copy.  I was hoping to attach a PDF so it could be downloaded but am having a bit a trouble  :-[.  Feel free to PM your email address if you would like a copy and in the meantime I'll keep trying to attach it.

Luzzu

PS.  Its attached now  :D.  Not the best scan as its a bit close to the typing but hoping to get a better copy soon so will redo it in due course.

As well as people asking for grave searches at Manchester General Cemetery, we receive a large number of enquiries via the Manchester General Cemetery Transcription Project website for help in finding graves at cemeteries other than Manchester General.

We set up a page on the MGCTP website covering the cemeteries that we are asked most about but we need to extend that now and find we don’t have the space to cover everything we need.  We also think its important that the MGCTP website only includes information about Manchester General Cemetery.  We have therefore set up “Manchester Cemeteries”, a sister website for the Manchester General Cemetery Transcription Project website.

We wanted to try and answer the most frequently asked questions we are asked and also include some of our cemetery finds, such as the memorials at Southern Cemetery for the Chorlton Union, Wesleyan Cheetham Hill and Walkers Croft reburials.  We are also offering grave searches at Southern Cemetery as well as Manchester General.  We can also offer help with checking monumental inscriptions from the various cemeteries/churchyards featured.

This is the link to the Manchester Cemeteries website:-

www.manchestercemeteries.moonfruit.com

The website is at an early stage but we are hoping that it will develop into a useful resource especially to those researchers who aren’t familiar with the Manchester area.

Luzzu & Cancan  :)

SUNDAY 25TH MARCH 2012

10am until when we want to leave

Hi All,

The weather seems to be good for us, so we are now starting to head back to the Cemetery for our 'Groundwork Days'

It is all about the digging now!!!  We have, we think a rough estimate of 400-600 flat stones to record.

Hoping to see everyone again!!!

Will update if anything changing via 'the weather'

Best wishes for an excellent "Groundwork Day" on Sunday, the first this year.

Latest thank yous and comments from our website guest book:-

I have recently found this website through a family history mag and been in touch with them regarding my past kin who are buried in the cemetery.Their replys to my queries have almost been as fast as CONCORDE.I cannot say enough praise for their help to me,they have really  surpassed themselves. The work they are doing for us family historians is fantastic and there is not enough praise i can give to them.Their work they do for us is so rewarding, keep up with your excellent project you are doing a great job.You have my most heartfelt gratitude for your help you have given to me,God bless you all.

Having seen the article in Family Tree magazine re your project, many thanks for your assistance and prompt reply to my efforts to locate the grave of my great great grandmother Hanna/Anna Morris from Belfast, buried in November 1857 in Harpurhey Cemetery.  I visited the Cemetery two years ago and was sorry to see the vandalised state of the graves and headstones.  Keep up your good efforts for the benefit of others!!

Having found several ancestors were buried in Manchester General Cemetery, I wished to find where the graves were located. The Project helped to identify that the graves were marked with gravestones and were able to provide photos from their database. One stone had been excavated prior to the photo being taken, and has been re-covered over again. I would never have found the grave on my own. Thanks to everyone in the Project and for responding very quickly to my query.

Hot!!! Very hot!!!

We got loads done, which was great with the weather being so hot!!! Especially when digging!!!

Gained a lot of new information.

Cemetery is looking a lot better than when we first started there in 2010.
Council are still working on erecting Gravestone, and in areas they have done it looks tons better!!
Grass cut regular, trees and bushes pruned and cleared away.

We noticed that there are a lot more visitors to the Cemetery as lots of Graves have new flowers left on them.  So it seems the Council are getting there!!!

Next Groundwork day   April 1st 2012

Lets keep our fingers crossed for the weather!!  We seem to be having Sunshine at the moment!!!
