As far as copyright issues are concerned - I think most of us that are actively involved would prefer to just get on with the weeding and recording!

But thank you for your interest and support Steve, I'm not meaning to dismiss your contribution.  :D

We are effectively donating our gravestone images to the Council in return for their help in getting them into a publicly accessible format than is free of charge (and as far as I'm concerned, free of copyright).
what I meant by this was, I am happy to hand over any photos of gravestone images to the Cemetery Department and whoever else gets involved, so that they can help with the project.
Best regards
 :) Barbara

Hi all  :D,

What does everyone want to do about Sunday?

Its not looking good 'cos of the weather and we are working in the worse part of the cemetery which is bad on good day.  Do we want to hold off until tomorrow making a decision one way or another in case there is an improvement  ::) or shall we decide tonight?  :-\

Either way, it was probably going to the last "meet" until after the New Year.

Being positive, the database is set up and the transcribing is going really well.  A big THANK YOU to Turnerchimes for agreeing to take care of the Latin transcriptions for us.  :)

Hope to have the website up again next week.  :)

Hi,

 :)

Whatever you all decide to do, PLEASE KEEP SAFE.  The cemetery will still be there when the snow has gone - just been watching Sky News an it looks horrendous although not sure how bad it is in Manchester.

What a great idea I wish I could help as it's something i would like to do for a church where I was born and grew up,  as when i went there the curator told me the buriel records had been lost or destroyed, so i had great difficulty trying to find grave stones for my ancestor's and gave up after 3 hours. My problem is I live 50 miles away and currently working in Nigeria too :D

Can anyone advise me on how to find out if someone has already done it? is there a common web site for Church or cemetry records? such a shame that these will all be lost to future generations if no one cares now!!

thanks Elizabeth

Hi Busylizzie123,

When we started this one off, we really weren't sure where to go so as this is a municipal cemetery run by the Council, we approached Manchester City Council who have been fantastic.  I think a church graveyard would probably be different though.  This is our link to the first thread we did when we started discussing the project:-

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,477484.0.html

There are some good suggestions on there and some good links too as well as another Rootschatter, OldRowley, who is doing a village churchyard project.

I would also suggest contacting the local Family History group and also the local Archives/Record Office to see if what records, if any, survive.

Good luck  :).

I was not going to
able to join the group this Sunday because of a long-standing annual arrangement with
my sister , well that`s been cancelled due to weather conditions and travel etc.But those conditions
mean I am not risking  travelling to or being out in the extreme cold  at the cemetery.
The stone seven foot high  wall in my Victorian garden  made from some quite large stones is all lifting up and is quite damaged,  due to the frost . I think some unstable gravestones may have also been disturbed  by frost and could be dangerous.
I do urge caution, and think you are all wonderful for even thinking about going.
Best of luck.Viktoria.

I am OK for Sunday. We will be 'on the road' to Manchester on Sunday in any case as we have some other stuff to do as well. So I'll PM my mobile no and one of you can text/ring me right up to the last minute. If the meet is cancelled, we will just carry on driving past, no problem.

Bizzielizzie, there is another board on Rootschat called Graveyards and Gravestones   http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,160.0.html
might be of interest.
