PS Many thanks to all who have replied so far!

Regarding non-conformists, there is a chance of that, though William certainly married in an Anglican church - twice!

Certainly all my con-conformists came from the Chelmsford area, by co-incidence!

I have Michael John Daley's death certificate now showing he died in the Union Workhouse in 1903, occupation "formerly a Hawker of Chelmsford", so I believe this is William John's father; Michael was also in the workhouse in the 1901 census of Chelmsford.

As a further favour, can anyone look up the marriage corresponding to the December quarter 1852 civil registration of a marriage somewhere in Greenwich (Greenwich 1d 857) of Michael John Daley? It is to either Ellen Jeffries or Mary Ann Plummer; if the latter this COULD be William's parents' marriage.

Again - not on some of the parish records.
Non conformists???

Looks like you may have to buy the certificate.

You could try contacting St Peter's Roman Catholic church in Woolwich .......... they may well have been RC if baptisms can't be found ............ they should know where the baptisms/marriages are if they survive :-\

Casalguidi :)

Thanks for that.  As my family and that of my wife are largely CofE (with a short period of being Independent on one side) I have never encountered the need to use Roman Catholic records before  8-)

I have just found out that Michael states he was born in Roscommon so the chances are he was a Roman Catholic....

There is a record of a Michael Daly baptised in Roscommon in 1819, but without looking, you cannot be sure whether he is Catholic or Church of Ireland

(I have a 'Daly' friend whose family originated from Roscommon!!)

I have spotted a William DACEY birth in Greenwich in the September quarter for 1853;  can anyone see if this is any of the local parish registers, and if it is DACEY or DALEY?  Again, I know the family were in Bishop Stortford by 1856...

UOPDATE - forget it - there's a WIlliam Dacey aged 8 still in the are in the 1861 census!
