Hi there. Nice to know the Coatsworth thread is still out there.
Do you have a date of birth for Emma? I have Emma Coatsworth, age 8, staying with Edward and  Frances Coatsworth in Maidstone in the 1861 Census. Edward and Frances are brother and sister but recorded as husband and wife, and were Emma's uncle and aunt.
Emma was born in Salcombe in Devon in 1853, as her father William (born in Maidstone in 1821), was working there as a coastguard.
Do you think this is the right Emma?

Emma Jane married James Thornington and had 13 children.  She was widowed at young age.  She remarried John Finey.   He had one son John Victor.    After John passed away Emma joined her eldest daughter Laura in  Toronto, Ontario Canada.

Re the Maidstone William, he entered the Coastguard Service on 12 October 1849 having been nominated from HMS Calypso, with a first posting to Salcombe CG Station. On 12 June 1860 he was transferred to Hope Cove, then on 22 May 1863 to Rochester in Kent, where on 18 November 1865 he was promoted to Commissioned Boatman (a petty officer in the CG Service). He was pensioned from Rochester on 6 July 1869.

While working at Salcombe he re-entered the Navy as one of the 2600 Coastguards recalled for service during the Crimean War, where he served on HMS Duke of Wellington, being awarded the Baltic Medal. It is also probable that he had seen active service before on HMS Harlequin during the 1st China War - if you are able to confirm this I would be grateful.

On the later CG records his date of birth is given as 19 January 1821, and from the BDM Index he looks to have died in the Oct-Dec qtr of 1879 in the Maidstone Reg. District. Following the death of his first wife he married an Elizabeth Carter in the July-Sept qtr of 1865.

In the National Archives is an entry for William and Sarah’s son William Edwin, who was sent to the Greenwich Hospital School (ADM 73/196/91). On the application reference is made to Emma, Frances and Lora. Additionally there is a possible pension application for William (ADM 29/59/383), if I’m correct this will list his previous service prior to joining the CGs. Both these documents can be ordered online, but are not available as instant downloads.

Hope there is some new information here.

Martin

Thank you!   I really had no information on the Coatsworth side of the family at all.   Emma's brother Will according to 1906 Census was the Harbour Master in  Dysart Fyfe Scotland.  He married Margaret and had no children.   I have a picture of him, will have to find.   He died in 1935 in Sculcoates, Yorkshire East Riding England.

William, his father's first wife was
     Sarah Grace Warn 1831 – 1864

    William Edwin Coatsworth 1851 – 1935
    Emma Jane Coatsworth 1853 – 1935
    Frances Eliza Coatsworth 1857 – 1907
    Sarah Grace Coatsworth 1864 – 1864

Spouse & Children

    Elizabeth Carter 1824 –

The Laura  I think they are referring to maybe Emma daughter.    Emma was widowed young with a lot of children and she had to work. So some of the children went to relatives.
I will follow up on your suggestions.   Thank you.

Thank you. I now have much more information about my great grandfather's eldest brother and his family. And found a new cousin!
Cheers,
Molly

I think Lora is infact Laura Elizabeth sister to Emma. See the following site : http://www.our4bears.net/parishes/Salcombe/Salcombe_bap.htm.

I also note that there are two navy service records available on the National Archives website (£3.36 each) for a James Thornington born Maidstone 13/2/1853.

Laura Elizabeth Coatsworth born 1859 in Salcombe, sadly died there in 1861. (Ref. Free BMD First quarter 1861, Kingsbridge 5B 157)

After the family moved to Kent, Sarah Grace was born and she and her mother both died in the first quarter of 1864. (Ref. Free BMD First quarter 1864, North Aylesford, 2a 357 and 2a 268)

Hello Wivenhoe,

My Coatsworth ancestors are from Maidstone and the surrounding villages in Kent. There are Coatsworths in the north of England but we have no known connection to them.

The furthest I can go back for certain is William Coatsworth, born 1791 in Mereworth, who married Mary Cook in 1819. They ran a pub in Maidstone, the Duke of Brunswick, as did their son Alfred and his wife Isabella, the parents of my grandmother Harriet, who was born there in 1886.

The William born 1791 is probably the son of Thomas Coatsworth, born 1768 in Teston and his wife Sarah Tupper whom he married in 1790. Further back than that is speculation but this is what I have so far.

William Coatesworth and his wife Sarah, who must have been born in the 1690s, had a son William, baptised in 1715 in Marden.

His son William married Elizabeth Bunyard in 1759 in Teston.

They had seven children,
1. William, who married Jane Groombridge in 1782 in Nettlestead, and whose daughters Elizabeth and Nancy were  baptised in 1783, in Nettlestead. (Twins perhaps, or sisters baptised together?)  William was a gardener, and was appointed Borsholder (Parish Constable) at Nettlehead in 1783 according to records of West Kent Quarter Sessions.
2. Elizabeth, baptised 1760, in Wateringbury
3. Sarah baptised 1762, in Wateringbury
4. Mary baptised 1764, in Teston, who had an illegitimate son William baptised 1784, in Teston
5. Nancy  baptised 1766, in Teston (Nancy is often a version of Ann, and there is a record of Ann marrying Joseph Waghorn in 1788 in Nettlestead).
6. Thomas baptised 1768, in Teston, who married Sarah Tupper in 1790, in Nettlestead, and whose son William was born in 1791 in Mereworth, married Mary Cook, and is my great great grandfather. Thomas was in Maidstone Union Workhouse in the 1841 Census, age given as 70, actual age 73.
7. Margaret, baptised in 1775 in Nettlestead.

As you can see, convict William doesn't fit into this, because his age is given as 30 in "Convicts Unbound", making his date of birth as around 1772.

I was hoping he had family in Tasmania who might know more about him, but no luck so far.
Of course he may be nothing to do with my lot, but I think all the Coatsworths in Kent were from the one family.

Thanks for your interest.
Molly

Hello Molly,
Sorry I can't help with your search for William Coatsworth the convict but I am interested in your Thomas who married Sarah Tupper. My husband's ancestor Charles Tupper was Sarah's brother.. So I can tell you about the Tupper line if you are interested. They were also from Mereworth.

Thank you for your message. Sarah Tupper was my 3 x Great Grandmother, so yes please, I would love to know more about that side of the family.

I'm still intrigued by the convict story, but I think it is probably impossible to find out any more about him.

I haven't done much work on my tree lately, but you have prompted me to take a further look at it. There are posts on this thread I didn't follow up at the time, so thanks for the nudge!
Molly
