Hi,
People who go through the parishes to determine whether the record is the one they want are only narrowing down the search . They would still have to pay for the full details. This seems perfectly good practice.
If people did not do that, then IFHF could be charging them for records that have been free for ages, such as the civil records that are in the IGI. I was very excited when I thought I had found my ancestor, but when I narrowed the search a little more it was clear it was the same old civil records I have been looking at for 20 years.
I am really hoping the RC parish records I need might come on line soon (if they exist) and I will be glad to pay my €5 for that!
I understood that when FindMyPast started showing the 1881 census data from LDS, there was a condition that they weren't allowed to charge for it (someone please correct me if I am wrong). It would be good if the same applied to civil records!
