Henry DOUGHTY - b. ~1833 in Portsmouth or Salisbury, migrated to Aust. in 1851
« on: Wednesday 08 September 10 08:40 BST (UK) »
Hi I'm researching my wife's family tree and I'm having trouble with the first Doughty to arrive in Australia. He was Henry Doughty.

I have a marriage certificate that lists the following info:
- Groom; Henry Doughty, bachelor, b. Portsmouth England,
painter, age 24, residence Ballarat
- Grooms parents; Richard Doughty, Jane Wells
- Bride; Jane Miller, spinster, b. Cambusbarron Stirling Scotland, dressmaker, age 21 (or 27), residence Ballarat
- Brides parents; David Miller, Mary Johnstone

His marriage was in Jan 1858, so that would make DOB sometime around 1834.

I've found his arrival into Australia in 1851 (Oct, onboard "Constance"). The record indicates a birth year of 1832.

Also, there's an 1851 UK Census record that shows an 18yo Henry Doughty living in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. It shows his birth place as Salisbury and he's not living with any other Doughty's in the house. This gives him a birth year of 1833.

So I have:
1. Year of Birth 1832-1834,
2. Place of birth maybe Portsmouth or Salisbury
3. Parents Richard Doughty, Jane Wells

From here the trail gets hazy. I can find no birth/baptism records that reasonably match this data (there is a baptism in 1851, perhaps he was baptised before sailing to Aust). I can't find any records of a Richard Doughty marrying a Jane Wells around/before 1832-34.

Can anyone help with information on Henry?

So it looks like unless Jane is a new wife to Richard, that this is not your Henry?

That Henry was christened in Wiltshire in 1831 as son of Richard and Pamela.

Was your Henry married CoE?

Do you have the full info from the arrival in 1851, as he appears to have been an assisted emigrant:

Quote
VPRS 3502 Microfiche copy of Register of Assisted Immigrants from United Kingdom 1839 – 1871

The register contains the nominal and disposal lists of assisted immigrants arriving in Victoria from the UK. The nominal list usually gives details of each immigrant's name, age, occupation, religion, native place, and whether he or she could read or write. The disposal list details what happened to the assisted immigrant after arrival: for example, the name and address of the migrant's new employer, how long the migrant was contracted to work for them, their wages, whether this included rations, and the date the migrant left the depot.

According to Passenger list of the Constance, Henry was age 19, a general labourer, his native place was Winburne, Wiltshire, and could both read and write. Arrived 27 Oct 1851 at Hobsons Bay, Victoria. Was in Geelong by 29 Oct 1851.

Thanks Ian. I'm guessing he could have disembarked at either (Melbourne is closer to Ballarat). Does his "native place" mean last residence before sailing or birth place?

This would be consistent with the 1851 census with a residence of Wiltshire (Salisbury) and a birth of the same place, and potentially the 1841  census (thx keyboard) in St Edmunds, Wiltshire.

Joe, he was married in a CofE church in Ballarat and assuming he didn't change religion, that would be consistent with the christening in 1831.

Assuming all of these are for the same person, there are two options regarding his mother:
1. Pamola/Pamela Doughty was aka Jane Wells, or
2. He was born to Pamela but by the time he left Richard had remarried to Jane Wells and he considered Jane his mother. This re-marriage would have  to have been after the 1841 census

So next I need to keep searching for the marriage record(s) for Richard and any other info on Pamela ??? and Jane Wells.

Thanks for all the info.

I've checked the census records for the residencies/families for Richard and Pamela and have the following:

YearAddressFatherFather OccnFather PoBMotherMother PoBChildren
1841St Edmund, WiltshireRichard (43)Bellows mkr      Pamola (31)      William (11), Henry (9), Richard (7), Robert (5), Rebecca (2)
1851   St Edmund, WiltshireRichard (56)Bellows mkrPortsea, HampshirePamala (41)Shaftesbury, Dorset   William (21), Henry (18), Richard (15), Robert (13), Emma (7), Elizabeth (4), Charles (2)
1861   Alverstoke, HampshireRichard (65)??? WorkerPortsea, HampshirePamma (52)Tisbury, WiltshireEmma (16), Charles (11)
1871   Alverstoke, HampshireRichard (77)   Portsea, HampshirePamalia (61)Tisbury, Wiltshirenone

So this family is consistent (other than Pamela's spelling, and her place of birth changing). It also shows Henry (at age 18) being at home in 1851 but gone  by 1861, consistent with having left for Australia.

The 1851 census gives Henry's place of birth as Wilscombe, Dorset (can't find this in Google maps) and his brother William as being born (~1829/1830) in Wellington, Somerset. I'm not an expert on UK geography, but these places seem to be at the opposite end of the country.

Perhaps Richard married Pamela sometime just before that. Her est. DOB is around 1910 based on the census records, so they were unlikely to be married before 1827/1828? And it may have been somewhere near Wellington, Somerset.

could the 1851 place of birth be Wiveliscombe, which is Somerset, not Dorset and not very far from Wellington

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/Wiveliscombe/index.html

Dorset & Somerset share a boundary, Wiltshire is to their east.

Some further info. Thanks to a pointer, I found the following on FamilySearch...

An IGI record for Henry's marriage to Jane Miller in 1858 (in Victoria). It lists his birth as "1832 Winburne, , Wiltshire, England". It says this was added by an LDS member, but no indication of the accuracy of the data.
