A curly one re: Ancient Order of Foresters *COMPLETED*
« on: Wednesday 08 September 10 02:50 BST (UK) »
Am writing from Australia & would like to ask, does anyone know if there have been photographs kept/published somewhere, of members of the following lodge-type Friendly Society?

Ancient Order of Foresters (A.O.F.)
Court: Court Sir George Grey, 3118
Period: c. Jun 1897 - Jun 1901
Place: Wellington

My great-great-Grandfather John William HELLIWELL (b. 11 Mar 1858 (during his Yorkshire family's brief stint in Canada) - d. 1 Mar 1910 (Wellington NZ)) was a member of this Court for at least 4 years, in various postitions including C.R. (Chief Ranger) in late 1898.

He was also nominated for District A.O.F. positions c.1900-1901 (e.g. DJB and DSB, I'm gathering this means District Junior/Senior Beadle), but I'm not sure if he was ever actually elected, or whether he would be in any A.O.F. photos outside Court Sir George Grey.

All of this information has been gained from articles in Papers Past (what a brilliant resource!).

The reason for my question is that my family has no photographs at all of him & this is an attempt (albeit a long shot) to try to find one!

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you so so much for helping, nicoleh!

The main part of that thread that could be a possibility for me was your post, in fact, mentioning http://www.library.otago.ac.nz/pdf/hoc_fr_bulletins/Bull_43_Lodges.pdf and the Hokken Archives, which lead me here: http://www.thecommunityarchive.org.nz/node/78116 and then here: http://hakena.otago.ac.nz/nreq/Welcome.html).

Have to say, that was a brilliant suggestion: The PDF itself had some great info, and then looking right through all the Hokken Archives' holdings for Foresters, there has certainly been lot of AOF stuff preserved by them!

Sadly, I was just unlucky in this case & couldn't find anything there from that time + area + particular Court -- so still looking, but again I super appreciate your suggestion. It could be an awesome lead for someone else in the same boat.

Hi there,

I found alot of records for my original request were held by the Christchurch Museum. I wonder if perhaps it could be similar with the Wellington area.
Also the local museum for the district where I was looking ( Rangiora) held records.

Good luck
