Thomas John Marshall
« on: Tuesday 07 September 10 17:38 BST (UK) »
Hi there.
I am hoping that fresh minds and eyes may be able to see what I am missing. I have found Thomas John (or John Thomas) Marshall in the 1881  and 1891 censuses at Warehorne and Kingsnorth. I could not find him in 1901, but he reappears in 1911 at Stamford Hill, London. On that 1911 census sheet he is shown as a boarder, married for 16 years and as having 2 children, 1 living and 1 deceased. However, his family is not with him.
I could not find what looks to be a likely marriage for Thomas on Free BMD. Without the 1901 census, I have no idea of his wife's name or those of his children.
         Any help much appreciated.
                     Regards,
                         Scobie

Hi Scobie

When and where was he born?  When does he use the name John and when does he use the name Thomas?

Hi to you both.
I agree, I should have given you more information. I was more concerned with getting down what I didn't know. My error.
Born 1875 in Warehorne, as a child he was John Thomas Marshall but seems to have opted for Thomas John when he was old enough to decide for himself.
That has to be him in the 1901 census that you have found as he also gives himself as born in Ashford in the 1911 census. I now have his wife's name. How could I have missed that? As I said, fresh minds and eyes.
Thank you both so much.

Hello again Keyboard.
The 16 years of marriage was stated on the 1911 census, so that would have put their marriage at about 1895. It looks as though they were probably childless in 1901.

I would be very interested to know more about Thomas John Marshall as he was my Great Grandfather's nephew. I know that he was the illegitimate son of Esther Marshall and was baptised in Warehorne in 1876. I know nothing of him since 1891 although I have just found his death details on CWGC 31/8/1916 which names his wife as Elizabeth Florence. There is a possible marriage in Lewisham district 1897 but I haven't verified it.
