Hi ordsteel,

 ;D  Welcome to RootsChat   ;D

I am not related, just helping out, but those who are related and have contributed to this thread have not been on the site for awhile.  Hopefully they will get a notification of your post though.

In the meantime here are the records of John THOMPSON who has been said to be also known as Edward CUNNINGHAM.

Convict Indent

(Page 2) http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON14-1-43,378,360,L,80

This is from a previous post of mine, and if you check the names of John THOMPSON's family on the (Page 2) link above, you will see that they match the CUNNINGHAM family in the 1841 census.

Hi ronneynel,

You may already have this from the 1841 census.  I thought the family names were interesting considering the names that Edward gave his children, and something to keep in mind if you can prove his connection to Manchester.

1841
Shude Hill, Salford
Manchester

CUNINGHAM

Peter, 45, clothes dealer, born Ireland
Anne, 40, born Ireland
Catherine, 17, cap maker, not born in county
Mary, 15, cap maker, not born in county
Ellen, 13, not born in county
Hugh, 11, not born in county
Edward, 9, not born in county
Peter, 6, born in county
John, 3, born in county
Sarah, 15 months, born in county

The first four children, including Edward, were possibly also born in Ireland, or even Scotland.  I am struggling to find entries for any of these people in 1851 - anything can happen in 10 years!

Debra

This of course is not proof that John and Edward were the same person, they are all fairly common names, but I think darcie12 may have other confirming information that they will hopefully share with you.

Just a snippet - the convict indent for John Thompson gives his native place as "Birmingham".  The names of his family on that indent are certainly co-incidental with those in the 1841 census entry.

If these two are the same person perhaps Cunningham was his birth name and 'John Thompson' was an alias.

This may be his father, perhaps stepmother, and two siblings in 1851.  The surname in the Ancestry index has two 'n's but the spelling on the image is CUNINGHAM which matches Debra's 1841 transcript. However the father's age is not consistent with the earlier record.  ???

37 Faucett St, Manchester
Peter Cunningham   46, labourer, b Ireland
Catherine Cunningham   30, dressmaker, b Ireland
John Cunningham   12, errand boy, b Manchester
Peter Cunningham   10, scholar, b Manchester
James Long   22, visitor, sizer?, b Manchester
Michael Renolds   19, visitor, striker?, b Ireland
Peter Reynolds   17, visitor, striper?, b Ireland
James Reynolds   14, visitor, piercer? b Ireland
Bridget Oneal   70, visitor, almswoman, b Ireland

(There is an O'Neal family next door - perhaps Bridget may bepart of that family?)

Anyhow, doesn't help much  :(
