Tas. Lookup CUNNINGHAM
« on: Tuesday 07 September 10 08:06 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for any information on Edward Cunningham born about 1832 he may have been born in Manchester, England but don't have any proof he died 1921 Marrawah, Tasmania. I think he arrived about 1850 but can't find his name on passenger lists. Would appreciate any help.
Thanks ronnynell.

Family say he wasn't a convict, I have found several convict records for edward Cunninghams, I can't find any other records of his arrival so maybe it wasn't known to his family that he was a convict.

Thanks, Ronnynel

Advocate Newspaper 26 October 1921 -
Edward Cunningham....resided with son Thomas for last two and half years....age 89 yrs 7 months at death...native place Manchester....arr aged 18yrs....lived Circular Head many years....worked earlier in Huon Valley.....daughters Mrs Cure and Burnell and Blake..all at Smithton. Sons Edward, John and Herbert all at Smithton, Alfred at Wynyard and Thomas at Marrawah. Buried at Scotchtown cemetery.

The convicts with this name who arr. 1841 and 1845 are aged in 20s so not likely to be your Edward.

You can find him from this database - he is the Edward Cunningham with no birth date, children with mother Elizabeth Kennedy - no marriage to find on the BDMs index.

http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=8

The child Hugh b 1875 is missing from fathers obit. Charles Cunningham d. 29.7.1879, parents Edward and Elizabeth, 4 years old, so that is probably him.

Thanks Wivenhoe that's a great help!
I have looked for marriage to Elizabeth Kennedy in Tas. & mainland states without success, maybe they weren't married!
Also I can't find him on any passenger lists....did he swim?

Cheers ronnynel

Hi ronneynel,

You may already have this from the 1841 census.  I thought the family names were interesting considering the names that Edward gave his children, and something to keep in mind if you can prove his connection to Manchester.

1841
Shude Hill, Salford
Manchester

CUNINGHAM

Peter, 45, clothes dealer, born Ireland
Anne, 40, born Ireland
Catherine, 17, cap maker, not born in county
Mary, 15, cap maker, not born in county
Ellen, 13, not born in county
Hugh, 11, not born in county
Edward, 9, not born in county
Peter, 6, born in county
John, 3, born in county
Sarah, 15 months, born in county

The first four children, including Edward, were possibly also born in Ireland, or even Scotland.  I am struggling to find entries for any of these people in 1851 - anything can happen in 10 years!

Available immigration records are nowhere near complete, and he may just be one of those who is not recorded.  Have you had a look at the Edward CUNNINGHAM who arrived on the Joseph Soames in 1847?  He was tried at the Old Bailey on 5 Jan 1846 and sentenced to 10 years.   http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/browse.jsp?id=def2-380-18460105&div=t18460105-380  He wasn't necessarily from London - his partner in crime, William BREESON, was from Lynn in Norfolk.  Edward was aged 16 on the ship's muster, and his usual occupation is given as Tailor, so he may have been serving an apprenticeship.

The Joseph Soames arrived with exiles at Port Henry (Geelong) via Tasmania in Sep 1847, and "....those bearing good characters are ordered to be discharged on their arrival in the colony on condition of remaining as settlers for life."

Edward CUNNINGHAM is noted as being amongst those "sent on shore not having obtained employment to their liking onboard."  ::)

An excellent and quite funny article by a Mr Broadway who was the second mate on the 1847 voyage:

Others relating to the arrival of the Joseph Soames

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/8761384?searchTerm=%22joseph%20soames%22

I can't see a marriage for Edward and Elizabeth either.  Do you know anything at all about her - where she came from, parents' names?

Debra

Hello Debra,
Yes! I have the 1841 census I agree it does seem this is the correct family.
How do I look up the record you refer to regarding Edward Cunninghams arrival on the Joseph Soames?
Elizabeth Kennedy was born 4 Oct 1842 in Launceston parents Edward Kennedy & Elizabeth Boskell they married 23 June 1841 Launceston. It's thought Edward Kennedy was a ship's captain or something like that.
Thanks Rhonda
