Hi YaYa
Because of the troubles in Northern Ireland , for security reasons the Irish Army done the gun salutes .Only high ranking or very prominent members receives the honour in the very late 1970s/80s. This had nothing at all to do with PIRA, as most of these old vetrans were totally opposed to the PIRA

The Provisional IRA derived their legitimacy from The First Dail.

Regardless of the official status of military salutes, I have seen on TV a variety of masked men, giving gun salutes over coffins in the 1990s.

attached photo is from my wife's grandfathers funeral in 1966 with a firing party from the Irish Army.

John Joe was IRB/Volunteer in 1916; IRA during the Tan War; neutral during the Civil War.

Recently stumbled across a photo of him in Joe Ambrose's book about Dan Breen. Dev, Breen, Sean Hogan, John Joe and his brother Ned at the Knocklong commemoration in the 1960's.
