Best value subscription sites
« on: Sunday 05 September 10 20:12 BST (UK) »
Have considered signing onto ancestry in the past, and now have been looking at findmypast.com.  I've been put off by the cost, as well as not knowing quite how much use they are likely to be.   I'd be quite interested to have easier access to uk census stuff, and am not at all interested in anything american.  Access to things like the Times, or other archives like that could be interesting too, as well as parish records.

Does anyone have any comments on the value of signing up with one of these sites?

They all have value in their own way, but only you can tell which one is the most value to you, because each person's usage is unique.  Your best bet is to take out a free trial (which both of the sites you mentioned often have), or try them on a Pay-Per-View basis, so you can try them out.  You don't want to pay a year's sub up-front, only to find out that it's not for you.

Hi
Have a look at some of the other threads on this board.   There are several asking the same question which you may find helpful.

Corinne - the other thing I'd add to Nick's advice is that there are discounts around, so worth searching these out before you commit.

Did you know that a lot of local Libraries have the Times free online, plus many other newspapers, all you have to do is join the Library (any Library) I live in Beds and joined Oxford Library online.

If you join Ancestry on trial you have to give them your credit card details and if you forget to cancel the trial before the end they bill you for the next year and continue to bill you year after year until you remember to cancel in time.

Hope this helps, Borri
