Have you heard of Teredo Tunnelling - gather that that might be involved  ::)

PS - I'm worried that my Tutti Frutti  DVD  might get stuck  - we had the video pinched in the late 1980s with a video player and have only just acquired the DVD  :-\

Thank you all for your help- I didn't mean to disappear last night but was delving into the laptop to see what troubleshooting had to say. Followed their instructions with the result that it wouldn't start this morning >:(

Restore point has it back functioning- so now to try your various helpful suggestions.
Report later, and thanks again,
charlotte

Falkryn, Thanks for the suggestions.
I've tried the safe mode procedure as you suggested byt no joy there.

R eyour suggestion of  the battery removal, I can't get it out.  Maybe Gadget can advise me as my  model Dell is known to her.  Gadget, if I lay the laptop flat on its front on the table so I can read`"Studio XPS" the correct way up, to remove the battery should the slide be to the left or right of those words above it?  Do I then just pull gently?

Thanks,
charlotte

Hi Charlotte

There is a slider release catch on the base  at the back and fairly central , just close to the screen hinge. Slide that and then gently slide the battery away from the bay.

Do you have the little booklet that came with it? Instructions are on p38-39.

I hope this link will work:

http://www.retrevo.com/pdf/23293dj188/16/Media%2C+Wireless%2C+and+Power+Controls#q=Dell+Studio+XPS+16

It doesn't go to the correct page in preview but if you flick through to around page 26, there should be a diagram.

Errrmmm...on my laptop I just have to push the tray in. That is, there seems to be some sort of spring-load thingy like some cupboard doors, you just push against it and it pops open.

Goodluck Charlotte, I hate it when thingys don't work as they should.

Thanks Gadget for the link... it's p 23-24 in my book.

I've done as suggested, removed battery etc but no joy still.

Now  the last suggestion is to check the firmware so here I go.

Thanks for sympathy LB.

I thought it was worth a try.  :-\
I phoned up a friend who has the same laptop as me, she says the same thing. It seems the eject "button" is built into the tray.
