Car accident inquest - Masterton *COMPLETED*

Hi,

Patrick Duane, my gt-grandfather, was a slaughterman who died in a car accident on the 5th July 1930 on the "Masteron-Carterton road", leaving a wife and six kids.  He was 51.

He was an Australian who was in New Zealand for work. 

He is apparently buried in Greytown Cemetery

I have his death certificate and found an article that references his death on the Past Papers website.  In the newpaper article it states that an inquest was to be held.

Does anyone know if I can find out info about the inquest?

... If it was something high profile it would possibly be covered in a newpaper summary as well, otherwise I assume you would need to apply for a Coroner's report

Welcome to the NZ Board. I'll have a look for any record of a Coroner's Report next week for you.

I suspect it'll be held at Archives NZ's Wellington office.

Would I be correct in thinking that to view the Intestate Letters you speak of Althea that I would have to go into the Archives?

Hi Mike,

I've ordered both the coroners report and the probate and will go back on Friday to sight them.

From previous experience some of the information in the former can be quite graphic so I may send it to you via PM.
