Edith Crew (Chignell)
« on: Thursday 02 September 10 17:56 BST (UK) »
Edith Crew born 1879 in Stanley, daughter of Alfred and Mary Crew marries Frederick Thomas Chignell in 1901. After this Frederick disappears, I can't find anything on him. Did he die did he leave? Edith is listed in the 1911 Census, although I don't have access to the details but there is no Frederick. Can anyone check the 1911 Census for me and see if anyone is livivg with Edith or if she might have gone back to live with Alfred and Mary?

Hi Lanshaw

We're not allowed to do look ups on the 1911 census, due to copyright.

Where was Frederick Thomas Chignell born and what was his date of birth?  What was his occupation when he married Edith, is it likely that he was away at sea or even joined the army?

Hi
There are tips for searching the 1911 index below.  As LizzieW says, we cannot do look ups.

I believe Frederick Thomas Chignell was born in 1873 in Buckinghamshire. I can't seem to locate him on any census and I don't have the marriage certificate (married 1901).

I've found the marriage reference in Dec.1901 so he should be on the 1901 census as a single man (unless he was already married!).  I'll see what I can find.

I see there are two birth entries for Frederick Thomas Chignell in Newport Pagnell, one in 1872 who seems to have died in 1872 and the other in 1873.  I suppose it could be the same family who, having lost one son, gave the next one the same name, which often happened then.

In Mar 1880, aged 35 also in Newport Pagnell, there is a death of a Frederick W H Chignell, I wonder if that was his father.

Like you, I couldn't find any appropriate Chignell's on the census, apart from 1861, when there was a Frederick Chignell (possibly the father, who was still a single man) who was a soldier in the army.

I can't find any death for Frederick Thomas Chignell, but what I have found is a marriage for Edith Chignell in Wakefield, which is where her family comes from, looking at the 1891 census.  I think on the 1901 census she was working away from home, so not sure if I found the correct Edith.

June 1913 Wakefield 9c 132 Edith Chignell married Joseph W Jubb.

Presumably, Edith either divorced Frederick (if she could find him ::)) or he died, or he'd been missing for 7 years.

If you really want to know what happened to Frederick Thomas, I suppose you need to get his marriage certificate to see what his occupation was and who his father was which might help to trace him.

Just in case the Frederick Chignell who died in 1880 aged 35 was your Frederick Chignell's father, I check his military details on FindMyPast.  It seems he was discharged as unfit for further service in 1871, suffering from heart disease. (He'd also been imprisoned for various military offences!) He had been stationed in Cork previous at the time of his discharge, so I wonder if he had perhaps met someone in Cork, brought her back to England after his discharge and produced Frederick Thomas.

All speculation of course, until you get the marriage certificate to see what Frederick Thomas' father's name was, or his 1873 birth certificate to see who both his parents were.  If Frederick H Wm. Chignell was his father, it could be that Frederick Thomas went to Ireland with his mother after his father's death and maybe sometime after marrying Edith Crew, he disappeared back to Ireland.
