Charlotte Adelaide Davis - Missing birth registration
« on: Thursday 02 September 10 17:07 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone out there who can help!  My great grandmother was called Charlotte Adelaide Davis but I can find no registration of birth for this name.  She married 8th May 1893 aged 20 and claimed her father to be an Edward Davis (deceased).  Census details say she was born in Birmingham.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,
There is a Charlotte A D Darlaston on freebmd born AMJ 1873 Birmingham 6d 23
also Davis female born Aston AMJ 1873 6d281. There is no reason to believe either of these were your Charlotte but maybe something to think about.
Best wishes

It might simply be that she is not in the GRO BMD index.

My brother-in-laws Grandmother born in 1916 is not in the BMD Indexes, the entry that is in there is wrong and their is no corresponding certificate.

Therefore I ended up contacting the local Registry Office (Warrington in this case) and given her name and approx birth year and father's name (we had her marriage certificate) they were able to provide a copy of the relevant Birth Certificate where the GRO could not.  The GRO's reply when asked why she was not in their index was it was probably a mistake at the time (also seemed to indicate this was not a uncommon problem) and they do not carry out any corrections to the index.
