William Charteris - artist
« on: Thursday 02 September 10 11:57 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any information on William Charteris resident in Bevenden Street, Hoxton in 1916. I have his son's marriage certificate and his occupation is listed as 'artist', no further information. His son, also William Charteris was a 'carman'.
I am researching my son in laws family - William senior is his great great grandfather. I don't think they are direct relatives of the aristocratic Charteris's resident in london- but who knows?
Any information gratefully received!

William, aged 21, is still in Shorditch in the 1911 census.
You would need to pay for any aditional information from the official 1911 web site.

Good luck,
Leonie.

yes, I thought being a PICTURE PAINTER in 1901 was a good clue  :P

In the probable absence of a Marriage, you could get one of their childrens' Birth Papers to reveal mother Emma's maiden name:-

Possibly this is Ernest shown aged 9 on the 1901 ?

Births Jun 1891

Chartres  Ernest Henry    Holborn  1b 805

and the youngest, George

Births Sep 1899

Chartris  George    Holborn  1b 708

Hi all  :)

Just in case the children's certs show Emma's maiden name as Scott, I can see this marriage:

14 Sep 1885 Bethnal Green
William John Charteris, 22, Bachelor, Labourer, 13 Wellington Street Kingland Road, father William John Charteris, Tea Grocer
Emily Scott, 22, Spinster, Envelope Folder, 72 Casston Street City Road, father Charles Scott, Printer

Witnesses Henry Toon and Susan Stevens
"My dear, I think the English pronounce it 'appiness"

I'm afraid of no ghost

Thanks again! Just had a visit from the latest Charteris - my granddaughter Izabella Rose - 5 months old.
I'm off to have a rummage round the ancestry site searching under all the different name spellings.
Thank you - you have all been so helpful :D
