Samuel FRANCIS

Samuel Francis was transported from Lincolnshire, England on the Hindostan in 1820 for 7 years.  A note on 'OneSearch' says that "he left Sydney on the ship Elizabeth in 1827 bound for England.  Free by servitude".

Can anyone thrown any further light on this, such as where he landed in England?

You probably have this info as it is about his transportation, not a return to England.

1825 he was in the employ of G S Robt ARLES? at Richmond (employer's name hard to read - probably the same as in 1822)

Not sure if this is your chap.
1817 tried at Lincoln, Samuel FRANCIS and Sarah FRANCIS, for 'uttering bad money'; both sentenced 1 year.

Many thanks, judb.  I do have the info. on his transportation but I'm grateful to you for taking the trouble to look him up.

You're quite right, it WAS him and his wife, Sarah, who passed on counterfeit money and were jailed for a year.  They had 6 children, aged between 2 and 10 so I wonder what became of them whilst their parents were in jail?  Poor little souls !!

Mind you, one of these 'poor little souls', Ephraim, followed in his parents' footsteps and was sent to Tasmania in 1836 for 21 years for stealing chickens and rabbits.

I don't know whether to be proud or ashamed of having TWO convicts in the family!

Can you give us his parents names  and year of birth?  Then we could search to see if he died in Australia.

The newspaper Public Notice of ticket of leave for Samuel FRANCIS (Hindostan) is listed in the Sydney Gazette, 4 May 1827.  On the same page is an advertisement for the sailing of the ELIZABETH to Isle of France 'in this month'.  Appplications for passage can be made to Commander Collins on board or to the agents Raine and Ramsey.

There appears to be another ship ELIZABETH in Sydney in August 1827, with a Captain Atherden

This would appear to be the ELIZABETH which left in May as it had returned from Isle of France.

Certainly seems very possible that he left on one of the ELIZABETH voyages.

In answer to tropicalj, I'm having trouble finding Samuel Francis's parents.  He was living in Langtoft, Lincolnshire when he was sentenced (and the rest of his family continued to live there right through to my grandmother) but on his Ticket-to-Leave it states that he was born in Suffolk in 1778.  There are a lot of Francises in Hepworth, Suffolk but I've not been able to pin him down yet. 

I can't find a marriage entry to Sarah either to see if he married in Suffolk or Lincolnshire.

I've now discovered that the source of the info. that Samuel Francis left Sydney in 1827 on the Elizabeth was the Quarterly Return of Persons that have been Convicts who have cleared out of the Port of Sydney, New South Wales.  I've found this web page but I don't think I can get into a passenger list.  Any ideas?
