John Dunwoody 1901 census
« on: Wednesday 01 September 10 07:58 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I had been patiently waiting for the 1901 census to go on line to find out if my great grandfather John Dunwoody was alive then and give me anything to identify him. He was still alive then and living at 18 Scott Street in Belfast but all it tells me is that he was 57, a porter and was born in Co. Down! His wife is listed as Eliza age 45 born Co. Armagh, all their children born in Co. Antrim.
His wife Anne Eliza (née Bird) is a widow in the 1911 and birth given as Belfast City!
I do have their marriage cert. - they were married in Lisburn on April 19th 1878 with fathers given as J. Dunwoody and W. Bird. The witnesses were George and Mary Dunwoody who I imagine were related to John but I haven't found a link.
Is there any way I can get back further? - ie  births for John and Eliza, parents names etc.
Many thanks in advance for any help you can give to break down this wall!
Regards
Barry Dunwoody

Marriages usually, although not always, take place in the bride's church so checking the records of church where marriage took place for their families might give more details.

For reference here are the census links:
1901-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/St__George_s_Ward_Belfast/Scott_Street/967353
1911-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Lisburn/Ballinahinch_Road/199975
Note that Ann Eliza cannot read so perhaps person writing down details just listed her birthplace as Belfast City like the rest of the family.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

A George Dunwoody married a Mary Bell, on the 10 November 1876, in Lisburn 1st Presbyterian Church.
Have no names for the fathers.
Possible relative ??.

Hi,
George Dunwoody, who married Mary Bell, had a father called William.

Thanks all for your replies.
John and Anne Eliza were also married in Lisburn 1st Presbyterian Church. I thought George could have been John's brother but not if his father was William. John's marriage cert says his father was J.Dunwoody.
Kingskerswell - where did you find George and Mary's marriage and does it not give Mary's father?
Regards
Barry
