Marriage lookup
« on: Sunday 29 August 10 22:23 BST (UK) »
Hi Chatters,

I have just been trying to get some information on some people who lived in St Davids.
Charles Martin, who was a mason died in 1820, and named his wife Martha, daughter Elizabeth and son James in his will of that date.

I am trying to find the marriage of Charles MARTIN to Martha ??. I can only guess the date, but in the 1841 census Martha is aged "80", possibly rounded down? This gives her birth date of around 1756-1761. So a marriage any time after say 1774 is possible but as their daughter Elizabeth was born around 1798, I suspect that the date is rather later say 1790s?

I am also researching the name Propert, any baptism of Thomas PROPERT circa 1797 in St Davids would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

You could try 1783 to Martha Oakley at St David's. I suspext that Charles parents just may be George & Mary Bowen mrd 1761 at St David's, but I am only guessing.
Have you looked at all the wills of the Martin surname at St David's in the main perhaps George of 1833? As an outside shot I would also look over Martha Martins will of 1843, even through her abode is given as Glamorgan.

Hi Orielbenfro,

That's very helpful, thank you. I am happy with the marriage you found for Charles Martin to Martha Oakley in 1783. I presume that you only have access to marriages at St Davids rather than bapts and burials.

I did check the available wills and eliminated that Martha Martin, whose will is dated 1843. She was from a more prosperous line I think. I thought for a while that I could eliminate one death as shown on FreeBMD but there are only two entries one dated 1845 and the other 1849. Either way the Martha I am interested in was aged 80 in the 1841 census so was a good age. Going forward from Martha, her daughter Elizabeth was aged 72 in 1871 census which suggests a birth date of 1797/8 which is 14-15 years after her parents married. And Charles will mentions only two children in his will. Perhaps there is a sad story here?
Could you see if there is any data on the Propert family of St Davids too please?

Thanks again for your help and for the possible parents of Charles Martin.
Regards
Delboy31

Hi Orielbenfro,

That's amazing, thank you again so much. If you can still send the jpeg images to me that would be great, but can this be done using Rootschat? If not I shall not quote my home e-mail address as that would infringe Rootschat anonymity I reckon.

Very best wishes
Delboy31
P.S. I now see that one can attach images to Rootschat, as it says so at the bottom of the page!

I see the last posting on this topic was in September 2010. I'm a new RootsChat member and would like to contribute. My family tree shows the Oakleys of St. David's back to Charles Oakley (1718-1793) and their relationship with the Properts of St. David's. The Propert tree I have runs from Thomas Propert (1665-1750) to Peregrine Sydney Goldwin Propert (1861-1940). I'll be happy to make these trees available to those researching these families.
