The Royal Crown pub, Ancoats
« on: Sunday 29 August 10 10:57 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm trying to identify the street that a pub is on in a painting I have (should be attached?). The pub is called The Royal Crown and it was in Ancoats, Manchester. Hope Mill is in the back left background. Hope Mill was/is on Pollard Street, Ancoats (between Carruthers Street and Beswick Street). There is also a local shop in the painting and the owners name is 'S. Howorth'. The only other information about the pub is that it was a Hydes Brewery public house.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Great site by the way...

Cheers, Rik

Hi & welcome Rik, what a beautifully picture you have there. Is it the original or a print & and who painted it?
I will see if i can dig any thing up on the pub for you, but sure some one will know more than me about it. Some strong old drinkers still alive & on Rootschat you know ;D

It was painted by a bloke called Steven Scholes who was born in Bury, UK in 1951. Apparently he now lives in Rochdale, UK.

You may want to ask this chap if he could look in any of his books he has on Manchester pubs? He also has a web site dedicated to Manchester pubs and well worth a look at.

Click here for Rootschater " Granata" & his web site link

I also googled Steven Scholes, well every one needs to be googled at least once in there life  ;D
He does some great painting of Manchester, but sadly way out of my price range  :'(

Click here for Steven Scholes web link

I looked on the 1927 directory for any S Howorth's shopkeepers in Ancoats area, so i could find the name of the street the pub was on but sadly there were no S Howorths listed.

Hi Ainlie, I've already sent an email to 'Hydes Anvil Brewery' and awaiting a reply from them... Plus, I've 'Googled'..

The Royal Crown.
Hydes Brewery
Hydes Anvil Brewery...

I'm hoping the memories and knowledge of this site will solve the unanswered question of "where The Royal Crown' in Ancoats was..?
