Hi Doodles,
Thanks for all the info. To add to Eliza Ann Read, I have a sister for her in my tree, Frances Mary Read, baptised 15 Mar 1815. (Please let me know if I'm incorrect)
As for the marriage between Edward Tipping and Eliza Ashdown, I only have this reference: Mar 1866 - Lewisham - Vol 1d Pg 934. Regarding Lazarus Addis, I have been poking around for a day or two and found that he went to the US via Canada and lived in New Jersey. It also seems that he got married and divorced(second time) there and had at least one child, Abraham Addis, born 1907. I can't find a marriage record. He is described as "British-Hebrew" on the 1930 US Census record....I think I saw it there.
Your question on the 'van der Westhuizen' surname, it is my maiden surname! It is quite popular but probably not amongst the top 'most common surnames'.....maybe just below them. Traditionally, 'van der Westhuizen' is more prevalent in the Afrikaans speaking community. I'm trying to gather info on my side of the family but unfortunately on-line records in South Africa....well lets just say....they aren't "great".
Thank you for the names of probable siblings of Henry Tipping, I will go and investigate.
Maybe you can help me with this one--Evelyn Spiers (Tipping) had two daughters, Clarissa & Caroline--do you know what happened to them?
