Cherry Tree Inn Little Stambridge
« on: Monday 04 April 05 22:37 BST (UK) »
:) :) ;D ;D

I have managed to locate my GGGGfather William Baker in 1870 as publican of the 'Cherry Tree'  Little Stambridge Essex.  He was 75 at the time.  He is still there in 1878 when he would be 83, along with his wife Maira.      The publican before them was a Samuel Offord, in fact the publicans from 1828 until 1867 are all Samuel Offord though as to whether or not they are all one and the same persons I don't know.

My query is,....does anybody know this inn/pub today, and what is it like?   and, is anybody connected to the Offord family that ran it between 1828  and 1867.    My Maria Baker (William's wife) was an Offord before she married, would be nice to think that they kept it in the family all that time.    Sadly, when William left the publican who took his place was called John Carling, and appears to be no relation at all.  :'(

Hi Linda

Yes the "Cherry Tree" still stands. Enlarged a little since the days you speak of. Its on the road from Rochford to Stambridge. Allthough they have expanded Rochford, it hasnt gone as far as the pub. It still has a country look about it. Quite a large restraunt has been built on the side now.

Well most of the Offords have gone now. Arthur Offord, who was our coalman, passed on about 3 years ago now. He was related to the Offords who had a number of Restraunts at Southend on Sea, back in the 50s and before. It was there branch who had the Cherry Tree.

Regards
David

Hi David,

Thanks for replying, I am almost amazed that there are still Offords around the place, I did think that the name only lived on as a second or third forename rather than a surname.  My father is Peter Offord and my son is Andrew Peter Offord.
Just think, if I had known that we had restaurateurs as rellies I might have managed the odd free meal!  disregarding the fact that I have never lived in Essex that is ::)

Cheers, Lindy

Hi,

This is an Essex link.  On the page there is a reference to the Cherry tree Pub, if you click on it there is a picture.

Hi Sue,

This looks pretty good to me, if I ever get to visit Essex I think that I will make a point of dropping in and having a drink on my GGGGfather William's behalf.

If you take the family tree with you, you may even get the drink on the house!!
