Where to find inquest findings?
« on: Saturday 28 August 10 11:46 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather, Joseph Foley (1857 - 1887) died in a mining accident at Coles Farm Colliery on the 8th February 1887.

I know there was an inquest into the event .

How might I be able to access a copy of this inquest's findings/hearing etc.,?

Best Wishes
David

Not a direct answer to your question I am afraid, but there are details on
the coalmining history resource centre website:
Fatally injured by fall of roof in a waste, which he had entered after it had
been abandoned, and the timber drawn.
You may have already seen this??

I have found very detailed inquest reports in the local newspapers of the time
I think most of the official inquest reports were destroyed -but the local newspapers report word for word what was said

Thank you both for your responses - I hadn't come across that coalmining site before (seems obvious now to search for something like that!) and will try to establish local newspaper sources.

If the records are still intact, will they be with local record offices, as other documents are?

Best Wishes
David

You might try local RO, for more details, but to be honest Usually the
newspaper reports are the best source for information........ Have you
seen the newspaper report as mentioned by Suzard?

The hard part will be tracking down which nespaper at the time may have printed a report. From just a brief Google search I can see that there were several competing newspapers in existence at the time. Whether their archives still exist will be an interesting search.

You are welcome!
If you are local to west brom local libraries usually have good holdings,
and will sometime search for you if you are unable to attend yourself.
