Raleigh in Knocklong
« on: Friday 27 August 10 21:44 BST (UK) »
My family comes from Bruff, Knocklong, and Hospital.  I am looking for someone who can take pictures of my ancestors tombstones in Knocklong.  I live in the USA and can't do it myself.  Does anyone have a suggestion

I would love pictures of any Raleigh tombstones in Knocklong.  I am trying to trace as many Raleighs as I can to link them together

Hi Eddie,

A friend of mine is from Knocklong and still lives there. (She's in her 50s.) I'll pop her an email now and ask her where the local graveyards are. I sometimes pass through Knocklong (about 25 miles from here.) Next time I am passing through I'll bring the camera and go on a hunt for Raleigh graves for you.  ;)

There were also Raleigh's living in Limerick City who could be relatives too. Mary Raleigh Of White Wine Lane in the parish of St. John's in the city died 23 January 1897. Her husband was Thomas Raleigh, a snuff grinder and they had a daughter, Bridget Raleigh.

(I know all this as Mary Raleigh was god-mother to my great-great grandfather!)

Hi Eddie,

I can't figure out how to to reply to your private message!

There are two graveyards in Knocklong. One is in the village, across from my friend's house, near the parish church. The other is up on a hill beside the ruins of a very old tower house, so that graveyard will be much older. I'll get out there and check them out for you as soon as I can.

I heard from my friend in Knocklong and she knows of only one Raleigh family in the locality - Pat (Patrick) Raleigh who lives in Mitchelstowndown, Knocklong. Pat is a farmer so it's unlikely that he has a computer, much less knows how to email, but I will call up there ask! My friend knows where the house is.

Can you message me again and give me as much personal info as you can about the Raleighs in America and where you fit in. I could give that as a letter to Pat with your phone number to introduce you. But once that's done I think the best thing to do is ring Pat yourself and chat to him. I'll have his phone number from my friend once she gets home from holidays.

Maurice Raleigh was the son of John Raleigh - 1841-1907 & Ann raferty and they had 8 children.  Rev Patrick (Paddy) who died in Dungarvan, Mary (nun), Bridget, Maurice, Catherine (nun), Anne, Ellen & Margaret.  Only Maurice 1873-1963 married - to Bride (Bridget) Walsh and they had 4 children. Nancy (Anita), Joan (nun), Mary & Pat (Patrick).  Nancy married E Moloney, Mary married D Barry and Pat married Mary O'Reilly.  They had 3 children, 2 girls and a boy.  Nobody with the Raleigh surname is burried in Knocklong parish.

Do you know anything about Patrick's parents?  This could be my gg-grandfathers brother.
