Hi Hamish

I believe that North Devon Record Office in Barnstaple hold a transcript of Pilton registers - not sure if it covers the correct period, but I'll be in Barnstaple next week & will check for you if nobody comes up trumps in the meantime. If all else fails they do have microfiche too, but that may take me longer

regards

Hi Steve
Someone has managed to do the lookup for the marraige of Abel Bake to Jane Carter 1788, but if you have a spare few moments, I'd be really grateful if you could have a look for their baptisms, about 1765, I guess. (still Pilton - seems as though the family were resident there for a long time).
Many thanks!

No luck with the baptisms of either Abel or Jane - I checked the transcript for a good period either side of 1765 (but see below for their birth dates). I checked the microfiche of the mariiage - not sure how much you know of it:

By banns, botp, both X, witnesses: Edward Ley & John Gliddon, both regulars. The date was 10th September 1788 at Pilton.

There were a couple of Carter families around in Pilton in the 1760s, but no baptism of a Jane. No Bakers at all.

I found the following baptisms for Abel & Janes's children:

19 Dec 1790 John
6 Oct 1793 William
1 Nov 1795 Betty (buried 13 Nov 1797)
4 Feb 1798 Abel
5 Oct 1800 Mary (buried 29 Sep 1801)
22 Aug 1802 Joseph
24 Mar 1805 Richard (poss buried 16 Mar 1812)

Their sons Abel & Joseph both married in the parish & had families. Joseph was a tanner in 1824 & later a machinist. Abel was a cordwainer (shoemaker) & also later a machinist.

In the burial register I found the following (besides the two daughters):

5 Jul 1831 Abel Baker aged 71
2 Feb 1837 Jane Baker aged 82

So at least we have their birth years. I didi look around a few neighbouring parishes (including Barnstaple) but could find no suitable baptisms for Abel or Jane.
