There are still many Vince families in this area of south west Suffolk (near to Hadleigh, such as Layham and Kersey).  However, it would have been a bit of a trek up to Bungay from here   ???

Hi Jean,

We recently stayed in the area for a long weekend, takes an hour and a bit to drive there now from south Suffolk  :D

It's unlikely that 'ordinary folk' will have memorials/headstones.

It might be worth writing to the church wardens at St Mary's to see if they have a 'map' of the churchyard and if they can tell you if/where your ancestors were buried.

I borrowed the 'map or plan' of our new cemetery from our churchwardens and copied it one afternoon onto the back of a roll of wallpaper - have it handy for when researchers knock on the door  ;)

Jean, I have checked the Diocesean web site and if you go to the pages for St Michael and St Luke there is a lay preacher who is also a church warden - I think it might be worth emailing her to see if she can help further.

The page with the info is here

At the moment the details I gave are just a possible.   You would need to check the Sarah marriage to see if she was indeed a widow.

However, the date of Charles is a baptism date, not a birth date, and could have been days, or even weeks after his birth.   Sarah may well have died as a result of his birth but at the moment it really is if's, but's and maybe's.   A check of these events needs to be made in Bungay records to see if it all fits or not.

Hi Thomasina

I've just peeped in on this conversation, which looks very interesting to me, as I have only recently completed the cataloguing of all 800+ memorials and gravestones in St Mary's Church, Bungay.

I hope you enjoyed your recent trip to St Mary's, and the search of the churchyard. I've checked my findings, hoping to discover stones for Stephen Vince or Sarah George but, sadly, I can confirm that I could find no trace of a memorial for either Stephen or Sarah.

Annette7 clearly has access to the same Parish Records data source as I do, so I haven't delved any deeper, except to confirm the burial dates of 25/1/1809 for a Stephen Vince, and 22/1/1823 for a Sarah George.

Wishing you the best of luck with your research.
