College St. Waterford City
« on: Friday 27 August 10 13:48 BST (UK) »
When I was researching Waterford City on the 1911 census, I came across a residence
in College St. having a large no. of females. I couldn't find out what kind of institution
it was.  Could anybody help me.
Thanks

This was the convent of the Good Sheperd Order of Nuns, who looked after wayward women. It was also known as the Magdelene Laundries, which was featured on TV sometime ago.
It is now part of The waterford Institute of Technology
Byrne, Whelan, Sweeney. Marlfield & Clonmel
Cullen,  Breen.  New Ross
Hambrook, Essex
Broughton, London

many thanks TLB. I saw that programme you mentioned and sadly am now aware of
the Magdalene laundries.
Thanks again for your help
