Loughlin and Adams of Comber
« on: Wednesday 25 August 10 10:13 BST (UK) »
Hello, new member. I am looking for information about my ggg grandparents John Loughlin and Eliza Jane Adams who were from the Comber area. I know that Elizas' parents were David Adams and Mary Mcmurray who were married in 1821 in Killinchy, and I have had some success finding information about the McMurrays, but so far no joy about the Loughlin or Adams side.

I know that Eliza was born in 1822 in Killinchy, and that her father David farmed at Grey Abbey. I think he was also connected to Ballyboley, but this is about all I know about him.

My knowledge of John Loughlin is almost nonexistant, I don't know where he was born, who his parents were, or where and when he died. I do know he married Eliza Jane in about 1845 or 1846 in Ballyboley, and that they came to New Zealand between 1864 and 1866. They had 8 children, and lived mostly in the Thames area. Eliza died in 1904, but John seems to have fallen off the face of the planet! Nobody seems to know what happened to him.

Can anybody help?

Not that I am aware of. I believe John was roughly 38 years old when he came to NZ in 1865 which would make his birth date probably somewhere around 1827. Everything I have seen about him says he was from the Comber area. I have heard of a John Loughlin death in 1865 but this is unlikely to be him unless he died shortly after arriving. Which is always a possibility :-\  I would love to find out!

I am starting to think that perhaps the Tullynakill family might be right. I have never heard of my Loughlins being there, although some of Mary McMurray's family lived there.

I have tried to contact the person researching them because I discovered that they are researching the same family as me, but no response. So- I would still appreciate any information other people might be able to find, because this John Loughlin seems to be a particularly difficult person to trace! ???

My family includes the Adams, McMurray and Loughlin families, and I am descended from David John Loughlin, who did in fact live in or near Tullynakill, and emigrated to NZ.    We have never been able to find wehat happened to him, and I was born and raised in Thames, NZ, until recently someone found a John Laughjlin (note speeling), labourer, who came from City Missionary to the local hospital, where he later died.  His age, religion, and time in NZ all matches.  Was always told that he walked away one day from family in Thames.  City Missionary was a shelter for men, located in Auckland, and they would only have the information that he elected to share with them.  You can probably find death information online somewhere, note the spelling of Laughlin.  I have met and known many other Loughlin descendants over the years, none ever knew or would say where he went.  You can e-mail me at (*)  I think we may have corresponded before??

Hello,

My family (on my father's side) descends through David John Loughlin and his eldest daughter Eliza Loughlin.  She married John James Woods b 1840 died 1920.  We have the following but no further information regarding our John James Woods or David John Loughlin either.

MARRIAGE.

Daily Southern Cross, Volume XXV, Issue 3658, 9 April 1869, Page

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=DSC18690409.2.5&srpos=1&e=-------10--1----0woods+loughlin-all

On April 3, at the residence of the bride's father, by the Rev. J Hill, -eldest daughter of John Loughlin, Graham's Town, Thames, late of county Down, Ireland, to John James Woods, second son of Henry Woods, Esq., county Tyrone, Ireland.

We can't seem to track anything further down regarding John James Woods and his parents or David John Loughlin like you.  They seem to have been in Thames for quite some time.
Wood, woods, inglis etc

I do show in my copy of the family tree that John James (Jack) Woods married Mary June Loughlin.  I list six (6) children, plus their descendants.  Names include Tye, Gratton, Kirkam, Wood, Illston and Shepherd, plus descendants born as recently as 1948.  You might want to look on Findagrave for the Tararu and Shortland Cemeteries in Thames.  I recall at least one WOODS buried there and I have other photos taken at my last visit to the Cemetery that I can look for  Loughlins came over in in 1865 or 1866 on either the Southern Cross or the Chile, I do have the appropriate passager lists, they did not all travel together.  Some went first to Ponui Island.  More info if you need it.
