Thanks

Was more than a bit embarrassed when i read my post back in the morning :-[

But people have helped me a lot which is cool!...........much appreciated

I know from my own research that my Gran Margaret Hunter Aisbitt b Springwell/Eighton Banks 9 July 1898 -

d Oct-Dec 1974  Ousten/Birtley

was married 1918 to George Bowbeer b 1895 - apprentice blacksmith - d Birtley 1953 Oct -Dec

and the sweet shop ( which i wanted to gather information about.....mebbes a bit unrealistic really in hindsight ) was on

Birtley Lane, north from Perkinsville Monument, and opposite the Grove, just before you get to

St. Joseph's Catholic Church

Anyway cheers from Downunder ......( rambling on and on )

Dave

I'm going to split my reply to get my msg count up :

So, Reply 1. You seem to be interested in finding out about the sweet shop in particular. Have you tried looking on google maps ? You can now zoom right down to street view level and I had a 'walk' along Birtley Lane yesterday, including around St. John's church. Unfortunately that was not really my part of Birtley - I lived in Queen St (next one to you) - and there has been some new development, so it might even be that the sweet shop has now gone. Whatever, I couldn't see a current sweet shop - but if you know exactly where it was, you can at least go straight to the spot and have a good look around.

Reply 2:

You mentioned the Bowbeers in Somerset including Mary Gamlin. This is a good example of the constant warnings around on family history sites generally, since I also had this info about the marriage.

However, I had the advantage (? - I've been to NZ and loved it, so perhaps not) of still living in the UK and so on a holiday in the southwest I went to Taunton archives to have a day of ancestor digging. I found the marriage certificate for the Bowbeer/'Gamlin' marriage and the name is definitely not Gamlin. It is more likely Gauler and I'm going to try to attach a photo of the original church record. Lets hope it works - then I'll try to reach you by private msg since my count is now up to 3 !
