Need help with a mystery man
« on: Wednesday 25 August 10 05:46 BST (UK) »
Hi all, this one is starting to drive me bonkers  :(, received a marriage certificate for George Frederick Back, states his age as 41 yrs in 1930 & a widower / contract labourer, married at Southampton, trying to find a birth record for this fellow or anything really to see where he originated from, says his fathers name was John Back ( deceased ) & a Carpenter by trade, been through so many records I've lost count, several possibles but nothing conclusive, can anyone throw me a few crumbs of info?

he died in 1952 at Portsmouth

thanks,

James ( looked in Scottish records & nothing )

Who did he marry - have you found him on the 1841 or 51 census?
Gadsby's, Farmers, Neals - Leicestershire

If he died age 63 in 1952 then he was born about 1889,which is consistent with his age on marriage in 1930- so that's a good start  ;D

Hi James,

Check out John Back born c 1843, Westerham, Kent in 1871 Census. He is a Carpenter.
His Wife Mary born c 1845, Chipstead is a Widow by 1891 with a 2yr old Son George.
RG10/921/167/22
RG12/672/145/2

thanks for all the replies so far, Trish, Chipstead sounds familar, might have noticed that but think something about later info put me off, though it's easy to get lost when going through so many names, I'll check that one again

did consider a spelling error & found a George Frederick Beck born in 1889 at Tamworth, can't find any other details about family, not on census anyways

regards,

James

Fair enough. Just in case it comes in handy later;
In 1881 they are under Beak. RG11/906/69/3

Only other suggestion I have is to cross check all George Back/Beck Marriages from say 1910 and look for Deaths of possible spouses.
For example;
There is a George F Back Marriage in 1922, Depwade, 4b 527, to Gertrude STONE and a Death of a 26yr old Gertrude Back in Pontypridd, June 1924 , 11a 499

Also have you looked fro him on the 1911 Census index?
