Grave - Thomas Price d.12 Feb 1897 Johannesburg
« on: Tuesday 24 August 10 06:55 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please tell me how I can find where this ancestor of my husband is buried? I'm hoping it might give us a clue as to the cause of death and why he was in Johannesburg at that time, having been born in Wales in 1864.

Thanks,
OzzieJoan

Hi there,
There is a death notice for Thomas Price in the TAB archives. If you order that it should give you further info regarding occupation and cause of death. Simmer and Jack is a mining company, so it is likely he was a miner on the gold mine.

Hi Joan,
If you look at the stickys at the top of the South Africa board, you will see info about the archives. it is our best source of info for anyone researching family history. It is just a reference, with numbers, to what is held in the archives. His death notice will be held at the TAB archives ( now Gauteng) in Pretoria ( now Tshwane). If you apply for the death notice through EGGSA ( SA genealogical society) it is very reasonably priced.

You will need the need the info below obtained from the archives ( naairs) to order a death notice. Death notices are a really god source of information. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with - but read all the info at the top of the board about death notices and the archives.

Thank you so much, Ruth. I will go look at the SA page right now. I might even find someone on there who could photograph the headstone if there is one.

Kind regards,
Joan

Hello,
The Genealogical Society of South Africa's national Cemetery Recording  project has an entryfor Thomas Price which reads as follows:
Thomas Price died 11.2.1897 buried Primrose, Germiston (Greater Johannesburg) he was 32 years old. From Porth, South Wales. Died at Simmer and Jack Mine, Germiston. The tombstone was erected by his friends.
Hope this helps.

Hello Nat,

Many thanks for sending me that MI for Thomas. It would now seem as though he left no family. I think it would have said something like 'beloved husband of..........'  That was my main reason for trying to get more information.

I did send an email to the company he worked for who are still in existence (Simmer and Jack) but have had no reply.

It would have been nice to get a photo of the grave - perhaps one day someone with access to Primrose Cemetery will manage to do that for me. There is a Primrose Cemetery mailing list on Rootsweb but there is no activity on it so not many members I think.

Regards,
OzzieJoan

Hello Nat , could you tell me how to find the Cemetery Recording project on the GSSA , I have been to the site but cant see what you mentioned, I am trying to see if my g-grandfather is buried some where in SA as family story is he was killed in a Gold Mine out there between 1882-1891, I have recived some death notices for John Roberts from the achives but they were not him, so I am trying other ways to trace him. Iam sure there must be some record somewhere.

Thanks and Kind Regards Mrs Griff

The mining of gold began here in Johannesburg in 1886, the province (or County to you) was at that time Transvaal or republic of Transvaal. the best way to see if there is a document on him is the website NAAIRS at the national archives of South Africa www.national.archives.gov.za it's a good idea to read through the HELP section first, but you should choose TAB and SAB for transvaal and see if anything comes up for him. I looked on the Cemetery Recording database (it's a disc I bought) but although several John Roberts mentioned, none in the time frame you require. Are there any other pointers for him you know of, where was he born, what year, a middle name, was he married, his wife's name, did he perhaps come out for the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902 ? loads of questions .. but they may just spark off a lead. regards, Nat
