his middle name was john and his birth was actually regd in apr/may/jun 1872 in thanet
you already have him with his parents william/elizabeth in 1881
there is only 1 alfred goldsmith birth regd in thanet between 1867-1877
this is the only one i can see in 1891 that might be him the only problem with this entry is that there is a george goldsmith and mary goldsmith in the same household

I was just wondering if you found anything of Walter Joseph Goldsmith b 1849 and Sarah Ellen Goldsmith both are children of Charles & Maria Goldsmith

cannot find walter after 1861 on any records in england all i could find was his birth reg in 1849 and the census records in 1851 with parents and 1861 with his brother

there is a joseph goldsmith on the 1881 census states born in ramsgate 1848
there are only 2 josephs's born in thanet reg dist between 1843-1853
one is walter joseph goldsmith born 1849 and the other is joseph goldsmith born 1843
maybe this 1881 census entry is walter using joseph as his first name
i have had a look for a joseph goldsmith born ramsgate c1848 on censuses 1851,1861
and there does not appear to be one
so there is a strong possibility that the joseph goldsmith on the 1881 might be your walter.
if you want me to try and follow this person(in the hope some later censuses might give some clues to whether this is your man) i will

with regard to sarah
the only census i can find her on is 1851
between 1851-1861 there are 3 deaths in thanet reg dist of a sarah goldsmith
she could have been one of those
on each of these deaths the name is down as just sarah goldsmith
because it is so early it does not give a est birth year

Would you be able to see if Walter is on any censuses after 1881 please. We know he was in Australia for awhile in the 1860's but disappears maybe he did go back to England.
