I have already used the site, and they have sent me my 2X Gr grandfather's police service records.  It tells you all about the person(even their eye colour and height), and when they joined and when they retired. 

It is very good of them.  They send the pages via snail mail.

My 2X Gr grandfather was also a policeman in Suffolk.  I would like their records, but they don't offer the same service that I know.  I know someone who has seen his service records in Suppolk.

Thanks for this.  I think I've found a distant cousin, Octavian Gray, listed as Octavia!  He died aged 22, leaving a son who joined the Met and became a Sub-Divisional Inspector with an exemplary record!

I also have 5 great-uncles from Norfolk, 4 joined the Met and one the City of London police.  Their records are very useful to add info to the family tree.

My Gt Gt Grandfather was also a Policeman and I have just received a copy of the Police records of when he was accepted into the Norfolk Constabulary and it makes interesting reading.

He was accepted in Nov 1855 and was dismissed in Oct 1867 due to Drunkenness (which according to the covering letter I received from the Force Historian was quite a common problem in those days).

To update I've just received Octavian Gray's records.  Only a brief service - he joined the police in 1868, was promoted later that year, had to leave in 1869 on ill-health grounds, died a month later, only 22 but he left a wife and two children.

His son William Octavian Gray, rose to the position of Sub-divisional Inspector in the Metropolitan Police and had an exemplary record, so Octavian set a good example.  Not bad for the illegitimate son of a housemaid!

I found this really interesting and have asked for details of a relative on my hubbys side of family, we didnt know he was in the police force.
