Thanks for all the comments.  I think Spidermonkey has probably found the right family.  I've sent for a certificate to confirm.  More later......

Stowe was made famous by it's manufacture of Ginger Beer During the mid 1800's

Attwoods Ginger Beer

Would be interested in source of this info or further info to help substantiate this - I have in my possession a particularly early (1830-50?) ginger beer bottle impressed 'Attwoods Ginger Beer Stowe' but have so far been unable to confirm which of several Stowe's nationwide this originates from. Any help appreciated  ;)

Thanks, Puffcat - I noted your earlier reply, but am intrigued by Bilge's comment on Stowe being famous for it's ginger beer manufacture in the mid 19c - I was hoping that he - or somebody - could elucidate on this.

As a newbie to this forum, I see no means of private messaging other members, unless I'm missing something? So here's hoping Bilge picks this up  :)

Hi all,

I did say I'd post an update on my family.  I found the girls were in fact born at Staunton, not Stowe.  I suppose with a strong accent the enumerator could have been fooled, especially if he had just been to Stow.

George was a widower in 1871.  He married again and had three more children, but he was a widower again by 1881.

By the way, I think the ginger beer reference is a red herring.  There are lots of places called Stow(e) that could explain the label on a bottle.  Ginger beer was made everywhere.
