Where is Stowe upon Wye?

Hi,

I have someone who says (1881) that they were born in Stowe upon Wye, Herefordshire.  I've found a Stowe on the map, near Whitney on Wye.

If that's the right place....

...what I really want to know is what Registration District Stowe would belong to, so that I can search for a birth certificate.  Anyone know?

There is an area of Whitney on Wye called the Stowe. Just a farm and a couple of cottages.
 It was in the Kington Registration District. These records are all now in Hereford Register Office, Town Hall , Hereford HR1 2PJ or 01432 260565

Stowe was made famous by it's manufacture of Ginger Beer During the mid 1800's

Stowe is a farm hamlet ( farm and several cottages ) between Winforton and whitney on wye. It is on the main road to brecon from leominster.and is close to the river Wye . I grew up less than 3 miles away and used togo to drop cattle off with my father there as a child. Can i just add it is on the main road but has a drive which runs parralell to the road . so it off the road as well like its been bypassed !! which it may have been many years ago. hope this helps. i would offer to get pics but i don't get out that way often.   vic

Many thanks for the replies.  I can't find the birth I wanted in Kington Registration District (thanks Puffcat) but it is a family that moved around a bit, so the births could have been registered elsewhere (I' m only going on what they said in the census of 1881) so I will go for a certificate of a sibling.

I notice you are interested in Jones in Herefordshire, so it might be worth mentioning the family I am looking for is George Jones and his children.  Mary Anne (1860) and Annie (1863) both seem to have been born at Stowe.  Any connection to yours?

If it is the same family in the 1871 census, Mary Anne and Annie are both enumerated as being born in Staunton on Wye (elder daughter Emma is born in Mansell Gamage).  Staunton on Wye might come under Weobley reg district.....

Sorry as far as I am  aware I am  not related toy those Jones's . mine are from Kinnersley and prior to that  rhayader. However there may be links as my Saveker branch lived around  the area for 400 years and had big families .
