Question, where would I look for a birth certificate for George Lowe born in Fyzabad India around 1878 he was the son of Private James Lowe, mother Maria Lowe, (nee Day) both born in Ireland.
I be-live James was in the 22nd foot ( Cheshires regiment)at this time. thanks in advance

For British Birth Certificates there are some foreign indexes listed on some sites

The only one where I know these are free are at
http://www.familyrelatives.com

These are rather cumbersome to get through but I have found them here

Also findmypast have these - I don't have a sub so have not looked there

Hi Tony

You haven't updated your profile so we don't know where in the world you are, so I'm finding it hard to know whether you have access to GRO birth, marriage & death fiche. They can be found in London (3 different locations), Birmingham, Manchester, Plymouth & Bridgend

More details here

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/Registeringlifeevents/Familyhistoryandresearch/DG_175464

I had a look at the GRO regimental index 1761-1924 and there are 2 entries for George Lowe, at Fyzabad in 1877 vol 1261 pg 20 and also vol 1262 pg 29.

The fathers of these entries was recorded as being in the 25th Regiment.

These could be the same child or 2 different Georges. The GRO fiche are just an index with the bare essentials of information.

To find out whether this is your George, you'll need to buy the certificates.

You could also visit the British India collection at the British Library at St Pancras, you'll need a readers ticket. His baptism may be recorded in their records.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tony

If you look at the top of this screen there is a 'profile' button

click on that and then have a look at the left hand side of the screen where it says 'modify profile'

click on 'Rootschat profile information'

then move down the screen to Location (Under birth date)

If your happy with Nottingham, type that in.

Then click change profile at the bottom right of the screen.

A lot of users find profile information really useful, as we don't want to suggest a resource on the other side of the world you would have very little chance of accessing.

Have you checked out your local library?

http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/home/leisure/libraries/libraries-newlinc-gateway.htm#referencematerial

Some of them may have free access to Ancestry Library Edition, if you haven't got a subscription at home.

Hope this helps.
