McNanley or McManley

Sarah MCNANLEY (or MCMANLEY) was born at Henry Street, Manchester in 1863. Her parents were Felix MCNANLEY (or MCMANLEY) and Sarah WATSON, who were married at Saint Patricks Chapel Manchester in 1855. Felix gave his occupation as a shoemaker. There is a Felix McNanley death at CHORLTON in 1877 on FreeBMD.
I have tried for many years to find where Felix was born. It is stated on his marriage cert. that he is 28 years old. His father's name is given as Thomas MCMANLEY, clerk.

p.s. MCNANLEY or MCMANLEY must be a fairly unusual name, there are only 3 on FREEBMD and they all belong to me. I've not found too many other instances of this name except in some Australian bdm records which are also mine

I had a browse through a few records and I was disappointed to not to find anything  

There was no listing under any spellings in the Lancashire 1885 Slater's Directory for central Manchester.

No Matches on the 1881 Census.

Nothing listed as yet on Lancs BMD

I did think there may be an irish connection but could find no listing of Irish living in Manchester with this spelling in 1861.

I thought it worth you knowing on what had been checked although it has not brought you any good news as of yet.

Thanks for checking, Sarah. It does appear to be a fairly obscure name, doesn't it? My sister and I have checked all sorts of records, for many years to no avail,however we never give up. Felix MCNANLEY had died by 1877, his widow Sarah and their surviving children were in Australia by 1884 as Sarah (the daughter) was married in December that year in Brisbane Aus.  Sarah (the mother) died in Melbourne in 1889. Sarah MCNANLEY is living at 345 Deansgate(where ever that is?) in 1882 and 1884 and her occupation is given as a clothes dealer. I'm not sure where this info came from, maybe a trades directory or similar. We had someone do some research for us years ago, with whom we were not entirely happy, however that happens at times I guess.

Deansgate it one of the main streets in Manchester city centre (there are probably others)

AussieShirl, You can't find us, because we spell it a little differently. Some McNenleys and McAnenlys went to Quebec Canada in the 1820's. They spread all over western canada. One branch split from them and went to New York. They use McAnanly and McNenley. Another bunch using McNanly started in Ontario Canada, spread into Michigan and Wisconsin. There is a big number in the Chicago, Illinois area. They were from Ireland but came through Philadelhia. A bunch in New Brunswick, Canada use McNanley some of them went to Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. A bunch using McAninley and McAnanly are in the Durham area of England. Some of them migrated to New York, NY and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. My family, went to Providence, Rhode Island in the 1830's. We use McEnanly. Cousins, using McAnanley and McNanley, arrived in RI in the 1840's. They have a repetitive first name of Felix. Another batch of  McNanley showed up in Providence in the 1880's. An Owen McNanley got transported to Australia for Cow Theft. Oh, by the way I ran into the McAnenlys who stayed in Ireland last November. The Pub Owners maiden name was McAnenly, She didn't believe my last name until I showed proof. They were from Ballygawley three miles away from where my family left in 1835. All the families come from southern County Tyrone in Ireland and over the county border in Fermanagh. So are we related? Somehow. Lets prove it.

Hi Paul, Thanks so much for this information, I was so excited to hear from you, and to think there ARE other McNANLEY'S (whichever way we spell it) out there also researching.  Isn't this site just so amazing!!?As you can probably guess, we know very little about this family and have searched for a long time. I had actually found entries of yours? regarding McNANLEY'S.  Do you know anything of "my" Felix's family?, parents, siblings etc.
Wouldn't it be just so great if we were related, and could prove it,  so here's hoping!

Hi all, a bit of an update (not much really) for this family, they are as hidden as they ever were!
Felix McNANLEY was born sometime between 1825 and 1833 his age never matches on various census and certificates.He states that he was born in Ireland,his father was Thomas McNANLEY, clerk.Mother unknown. Felix married Sarah WATSON 1855 at Manchester (marriage cert.)Sarah's parents were William WATSON, clothes dealer, and Ann unknown, Sarah gives her birthplace as Monaghan,Ireland. Felix and Sarah were witnesses to the marriage of Felix's sister Mary McNANLEY and William WARD in 1854, that cert. says that Thomas McNANLEY is deceased. Felix and Sarah produced 7 children from 1856 to 1870, all at Manchester. Unable to find this family on 1861 census, they are on 1871 census,on one site they are transcribed as McHEMLEY and another site has them as McHAWLEY and on 1881 census they are McMANLY . Felix is deceased by 1877, Sarah and surviving children came to Australia on board the Corona to Townsville 1884.On that shipping list they are transcribed as McNAULEY. Sarah(the daughter) married in Brisbane to Charles ELPHICK, 1884. Sarah (the mother) lived in Melbourne with her son James and 2 daughters Annie and Margaret, none of these children married, they lived in Western Australia after their mother died. James hung himself in Marble Bar 1907,Annie died 1933 and Margaret died 1952. I do not know where else to look for any of these families, wondering if Sarah WATSON and Felix had any other siblings that I could maybe get some kind of hint from.

Have found a sister to Sarah WATSON. On the 1881 census, Sarah had a niece and nephew with her, on checking found that they were the children of Francis MULLIGAN and Mary Ann WATSON, who were married at Chorlton 1866. Francis born Lancs. and MaryAnn born c. 1844 at Monaghan Ireland. Mary Ann died aged 36 in 1881,1st qtr.Unable to find Mary Ann's birthplace or year of birth.
