I am hoping someone will point me in the right direction to and obtain a birth certificate for William Robertson who was born 1857 in New York U S A his parents were William Robertson and Margaret Smith. What I know his parents were born in Scotland but moved to New York where all their children were born, William Robertson died 1968 in Edinburgh.

New York State, with the exception of a few cities, didn't require vital registration until 1881.  So, it would depend where he was born and if they have anything available on the local level.

Hello Ann,

I don't really know whether this will help you out or not.

Shellyesq is the New York expert and has a much better idea of what is available than I have.

I have just received this information which came from the Ask A Librarian section New York Public Library and wondered if it could help you at all (it was sent to someone I was trying to help out and this was there reply to her, it may be useful, it may not) :-

The best location in The New York Public Library for historical and genealogical research is the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building Irma and Paul Milstein Division of United States History, Local History and Genealogy (http://www.nypl.org/locations/schwarzman/milstein-division-us-history-local-history-genealogy), 476 5th Ave. and 42nd St., Rm. 121.

Contact information, including e-mail address, for the Genealogy Division is as follows:

First Floor, Room 121
Phone: (212) 930-0828
E-mail: histref@nypl.org

Regards
Sandra

Hi
I have made some headway with William and Margaret, they were married 1853 in Scotland they had a daughter Elizabeth 1856, William 1857 and Andrew 1866 all born in Manhattan, New York, I have found them on the 1870 American census, but not at this moment found them on any passenger lists.

William's son William died 1918 in Crieff, Scotland, he married Helen Brotchie 1883 in Edinburgh and Andrew he married Isabella Paxton 1894 Edinburgh, I have their children all born in Edinburgh, but can't find any death dates for any of them yet.

Hope someone will might be able to fill in the gaps between them getting married and the 1870 census.

This could well be in my direct line.

Did you trace them back to Margaret Smith Robertson, daughter of William Robertson and Jean (Jane) Hutton of Inveresk (Musselburgh/Prestonpans)

She was daughter of Charles Hutton, my direct line.

I would be interested for other info if so. I have 5000 Hutton names in Scotland and also much on the Robertsion family, farmers and potters in the main, re that family.
