William James WOOLDRIDGE
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 15:06 BST (UK) »
Hello I am looking to see if anyone can help me in the search of William James Wooldridge DOB 1863 in Portsea England.

He travelled to Australia sometime between 1882 and 1901, He was an apprentice carpenter, and although he returned to England/Wales,  later he returned with a change of name.

Thank you for reading this Tidller

Hi tidller

Not having much luck with this chap.

I see a William WOOLDRIDGE, labourer, aged 15 arriving into Sydney 1876 with his parents William, shoemaker, (native place: Isle of Wight) and Eliza (Surrey).  This William appears to have been born in NSW but his parents and brothers(Essex)  in UK.  It does not look as though he fits.

I am assuming your man is the one at 19 Herbert St Portsea in 1881, apprentice shipwright, parents James and Caroline.

I wonder if he may have come as ship's crew.

Do you have any further information - could he have changed his name here in Australia?

Hi Judith

Thank you for your reply, yes it is the one from portsea and his name was changed to Seaford which was his Mothers maiden name.  The mystery deepens because in the 1920's he was being searched for by some people in Australia.  Trying to find his where abouts.

Tidler,
William James Wooldridge b1862., became Seaford c 1901, was my mother's grandfather. She was Clara and her mother, also Clara, was a daughter of William James and Harriet Hunt. Are we related?
