John Munro(e) b 1837
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 14:03 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find some information about my G G Grandfather, John Munro(e).  I know he was born in 1837 and he died on 20 Oct 1905 in West Ham, London.  He married Susannah Barker on 25 Dec 1868 at St Thomas Church, Stepney.  They had 8 children.

Elizbabeth b.1870 - d.1871
Mary Jane b.1872 d.1964
John b.1875 d.1918
Alexander b.1877 d.1956
Susannah b.1879
Joseph b.1882 d.1922
Thomas b.1885
Arthur b.1887 d.1920

My main query is on all of the Census records it just says John Munro(e) b.1837 was born in "Scotland" - I cannot find any information about exactly where he was born.  I do know from his marriage certificate that his father was called Alexander and that when he married in 1869 his father, Alexander, is recorded as deceased.  Any information about my G G Grandfather would be much appreciated.  His occupation was a Ship's Clerk.

Thank you!

Hi

Unfortunately - there are 5 possible 1841 entries with a father Alexander.  I have listed location, birthyear and mothers name below

In all cases surname is spelt Munro - no entries with a father Alexander for Munroe or Monroe

Renfrewshire - 1836 - Elizabeth
Ross & Cromarty - 1837 - Jess
Midlothian - 1837 - Hellen
Ross & Cromarty - 1838 - Isabela
Aberdeen- 1838 - Ann
Gorbals Lanarkshire but not born there - 1838 - Chris

Thanks Carole,

Do you think the only way to find out is to order Birth Certificates or would there be another way?

Thanks again

Sandra

Registration of births in Scotland didn't start until 1855.

Being honest - with great difficulty at the moment.  If he had married in Scotland - no problem - as mum's name and maiden name would have been shown on the marriage cert

The marriage cert does not show any occupation for his father - just "Deceased" as that may possibly have helped in elimination.  Neither of the witnesses were surname Munro/e so no help there

The English 1861 census has an entry for a John Munro b 1837 and a soldier at Charing Cross Barracks.  His is the only entry with an actual birthplace and one that links to an entry I showed above - Kiltearn Ross & Cromarty - whilst all others just show Scotland
