What is "Hill End" in Droitwich / Dodderhill ?
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 00:39 BST (UK) »
I've seen many different types of records referring to "Hill End," for instance, as the abode in a parish record. Sometimes, it seems to be a part of Droitwich but, other times, Dodderhill.  Is it a street or a neighborhood or something else? And, is it me, but are Droitwich and Dodderhill sometimes used interchangeably?  Thanks for your consideration!

Hi encinita

I spent several years in my teens living in Droitwich but don't think I ever heard Droitwich confused with Dodderhill
Dodderhill was an area up a hill out of Droitwich in the Bromsgrove direction, wasn't much of a village, there was a church at the top of the hill and you could look down on Droitwich from it I remember so possibly your Hill End could be around there
When the motorway was built it went right through the middle of that area, not sure what it looks like today, I haven't been back in ages
Droitwich is a town along the River Salwarpe, the main street is in a dip and I remember one year when it flooded and people were getting around in boats
It is famous for its salt deposits and salt water baths

Hi encinta

Hill End is in Droitwich, but was/is part of Dodderhill parish.  If you Google 'Hill End Droitwich' it will give you some idea of the general location.  Dodderhill is a separate parish from the three Droitwich parishes (St Andrew, St Nicholas and St Peter).  Today the Dodderhill area is very much part of Droitwich.

Andy & SC,
Thank you for your comments!  One branch of my ancestry was in the Dodderhill / Droitwich area from the very early 1700s to the mid 1800s.  I'm having a terrible time keeping all the parishes straight.  It's nice to have the perspective of someone who knows how all the places fit together! Your help is greatly appreciated!

Andy,
Thank you for thinking of me.  This is a super site: it's going to take me ages to read it all!  The maps will be especially useful.  I've made a note to check back regularly as they add records, too.  Thank you, again!

Dear Friends,
Thank you again for all your help!  I went back to the Dodderhillhistory.org site again yesterday and found my great-great-great-grandfather, William Causier, actually mentioned on one page.  Links there took me to the Worcestershire County Council site, where I actually found a database and map specifically labeling William's parcel in the tithe maps of 1845!  And, Hill End was labeled, too!  A street view at Google maps showed me the Hill End bus stop right about where William's parcel was!

Now, of course, new information leads to more questions.  The database says the Area of the parcel was 0,0,9     What might those units of measure be for that time period?

Again, I am so excited!  Thank you so very much for all your help!
