Hello Casalguidi,

Many thanks for that.  That is really useful confirmation (and it is *my* Jane!).  I'd discovered anecdotally that William Henry Swinyard and Jane married in Faversham in June 1824, but I hadn't found any confirmation of that until your posting today!
The problem is, I knew that Jane had to have been Jane Hughes at some stage, as she and William Swinyard's children all styled themselves "Hughes Swinyard" (which usually suggests either that the parents weren't formally married or one or both were of Gypsy origin).  But I don't know whether Hughes was her maiden name or the name of a previous husband.  My 2x great grandfather Stephen (Jane's son) was simply Stephen Hughes, but he lived with the Swinyards (and there wasn't that much of an age gap between him and the Swinyards' eldest child).  On Stephen's marriage certificate his father is given as John Hughes, but I'm not convinced that he ever existed!

Sincere thanks again for your much appreciated help!

Hello again Gemini,

Sorry - I saw your message first, so I've half-replied to your question!

My Jane Swinyard was born in Faversham in 1796 and died in Faversham in 1869.  Thanks to Casalguidi, I now know that she married John (Sampson) Hughes in 1816 and was born Jane Catt, so she's definitely not the same as your Jane Swinyard after all.  But I still can't understand why Abigail and Katherine Hatch were living with my Jane and her husband William in 1861.  Maybe it's just a complete coincidence and these Hatch sisters are nothing to do with your ancestors... ???

Best wishes,
RromHughes
