Your ancestor must have been a citizen of the Ottoman Empire, or at least registered as such with the British authorities. That would have been the reason he was incarcerated.
Have you checked Kew, or elsewhere, to see if records of "aliens" residing in England still exist?

Meanwhile I have seen at an Austrian living in London, that also was interned, because only of being "Alien". So think also, like others stated in above postings , that it was usual to check them up if anywhere a threat about them. The austrian person then came free after some months when was checked up.
