Peninsular War Veteran
« on: Saturday 14 August 10 23:47 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on my grt grt grt Grandfather Richard Cragg of Mobberley Cheshire.
We have seen information that Richard was a pensioner of the Peninsular War. We are trying to find Richards parents and have rum out of options looking in all the usual places.

We know that Richard was born in Mobberley in 1776 and married in 1810 in Unst Shetland to a Margaret Fordyce. they had children there and moved back to Mobberley where Richard was employed as a gamekeeper.

He died about 1830 in Mobberley. We were hoping to get clues to his parents from his military records from the Peninsular War and how he arrived in Shetland.

Hi Tony

His record does not appear to have survived. You can check on Findmypast but he is not showing on the National Archives Catalogue on which these early ones are based.  You could check the regimental BMDs on site such as Findmypast, as they started to record some events before civil registration started. These will tell you his regiment.

As he died before the medal for the Peninsular War was announced (1847) he did not recieve one, so you cannot use that to discover his regiment. Without his regiment there is little you can do. Even with his regiment this is 70-80 years before the army recorded a man's next of kin on enlistment.

Hi Ken, thanks for the info and insight. I went to findmypast and tried the free search for a Richard Cragg in the Peninsular war. it came up with a Richard Craggs (not Cragg) of Knutsford. This looks very much like our Richard, however we have to purchase credits to look further. Have you any insight into this site re: is it worth me purchasing credits to look further.

Regards

Tony
