Found the same entry as Toby re: John's baptism.

Found some of John's siblings -
Elizabeth - 27/6/1823
Stephen 20/12/1829
Martha 24/2/1833

The next baptism was for a Stephen Souch 5/11/1848 buriel 21/10/1852 son of John and Mary
William - 12/10/1850
Frederick - 1/2/1852
These could be the children of John?

Mary Ann buried 16/4/1886 age 64
John buried 15/1/1899 age 78

Hello all,

I am also looking for DRINGS in (West) Oxfordshire and have cobbled together some information involving my direct ancestors from the Charlbury area:

Alfred Edward Dring: Born 1879 (Married to Edith Honey)
(Alfred's Father) Charles Dring: Born 1838? (Married to Mary Biles, a widow of Reuben Biles? in 1877)
Charles' Father) Joseph Dring: Born 1806? (Married to Sophia Doare? in 1832)

I am very new to this and am still unsure about how to proceed further back from Joseph.  From parish records, I see there are 2 Josephs baptised in 1806 to 2 different couples in West Oxfordshire. Which -if any- was he?

I keep hearing about a George Dring and a Thomas Dring, but have so far not traced them as a possible link.  But as I said, I'm new!

Anyone got any advice?

Best Wishes,

Ali

Hi Ali
Welcome to Roots Chat I just KNOW you will find so much help in here and it does get addictive so be warned!!

Now to general advice - I would really recommend you start a new post rather than add to one that is already running and as the case here it has been going on for a while and yet has not seen much activity of late.

You will then be able to watch and manage the information that is offered to you in a better way - unless of course you are certain the existing thread / post specifically relates to the issue/s you are seeking information / advice about.

I always think it is better to start afresh.

In regard to the information you are seeking there is simply loads available to you both on here and of course many many other sources. It is a little awkward to suggest some sources as they may appear to be teaching you to suck eggs or offend .. So always try and offer as much info as you can - without of course presenting your whole tree!!! - then be as specific as you can about what you are looking for  and where you have tried already. But as you go on with your research the type and amount of info you share and tell us what you are looking for will also give us clues about your strengths and - don't be offended - weakness that will help 'us' help you.

I have the Charlbury PR's and can look up info for you any time you ask, so will others on here - that's the easy bit!.
As your research progresses you are going to have to end up buying certificates and because they become expensive we all try and avoid that but you will get to a point where you cannot do without them. They do also become invaluable with the amount of information they provide and it is nice to have them for closer members of the family.

Now your Joseph, you may well have to follow other siblings or children of both Josephs until you find the link to confirm which one is yours. As an example, there may be a later informant on a death cert or a witness at a wedding, or an in law or cousin etc living with one of the 2 families you have and that family eventually gives you the clue you need to determine which Joseph is yours.

Look at Josephs occupation and see if they are offering a clue?
Start with a blank A4 page and start writing the tree out for BOTH of them, you will then build a pictorial map of clues that you can add / delete and X refer to - it has worked for me so many times since I started doing this full time 7 yrs ago.

Anyway - enough from me, I reckon you need to start a new post and see where it takes you. Shout if you need help. Send Personal Messages when you have sent more than 2 posts.

T ra for Now

Hi Nigel,

WOW! Thanks so much for getting back in touch so quickly.  I am extremely impressed and grateful for your advice and I'm sorry I haven't been in touch until now.

I have got in rather a muddle and the onset of severe labrynthitis has not helped my research much (dizzy & disorientated in both life AND the family tree world!).

So, now feeling a bit better, I will take your advice & start a new post.  And work out HOW to include all the information I know so far.  I do like the idea of writing out trees for BOTH of the Joseph's to look for clues too. Thank you!

I still don't know whether we are related to Lavinia Dring (Ascott Martyrs) but I do know that Jane Pratley (one of their supporters) was possibly one of our ancestors, Jane Dring (before she married Jesse Pratley in 1854 in Finstock).

Maybe I can add more information to this post further down the line!  Good luck to all of you with your searches.

Grateful thanks Nigel!

Ali
