I think the columns were made of some kind of plaster. I seem to remember a kind of chalky feel to them  ???

I am almost certain that the columns were Icing sugar

What an absolute amazing wedding cake and brilliant restores too!!  If it was my cake I don't think I could have eaten it, it's a work of art!! ;D

I wonder if there's still a piece of it around somewhere...it's possible. Soaked in rum or whiskey and packed in powdered sugar, a piece of fruit cake could theoretically last a century...
