Cumberland seaman by the name of Robbs

After years of trying, and another few years of being resigned to the fact that I would never
know who my great grandfather was, a long lost family member has come up with a name!?!
I am so excited I cannot think straight!!
My Grandma was born illegitimate and brought up by her natural mother's sister. A fact that we
knew nothing of, until her death in 1980 when a family member divulged.
We were told that her father was a seaman and did not return from WW1, and that was all.
Today I have been told that the seaman's surname is Robbs and was sent off to war by his
mother so that he would be relieved of the burden of marrying.
Can anyone help with this surname?
I should mention that my Grandma was born Whitehaven and her father, we believe was also from there.
Where can I find the roll of honour for Whitehaven (WW1)?
Any help at all would be so appreciated.

I've had a look on the Commonwealth Wargraves Commission site.  Anyone on a Whitehaven Roll of Honour should also be on there.

Of course the fact he did not come back from Sea does not menan that he was killed.

He may have decided to follow a carreer at sea - even if this was not just a tail to put people off the scent!

There were very few called Robbs but I looked at Robbs as well for this area.

I also looked on the 1901 Census and there were two fairly large families of Robbs in the town.
I can't see any others in the area.

I've not given specific names as it's getting a bit near the time for living relatives.  If I find anything correct though, I'll pm you.  I assume you have a birth certificate with just the mother.

I'll have a think what else there may be.

Thankyou so much for your help, I have ammended post topic, as I have been told that he was definately
a seaman (this info has come from 2 sources)
I am relying on the memories of family members and what they were told so I am keeping an open mind!
Having spoken again to my source, it seems now there is a possibility that he did not die as I was led to
believe by another relative.
I too have seen the Robbs families in 1901 and it does make me wonder if one of these could be my gt
grandfather, but I would need to link one of them to some naval activity in WW1, it seems this is more
difficult if they survived.
I do have my grandmothers birth cert and predictably there is no father named.

Ive just searched today on this site today to see if anyone was looking for the robbs family of whitehaven!!!!!  I have done this family tree....Robert robbs went into the wwi (the family have irish decent from co tyrone...if you would like more please contact...His mother was magaret and his father was robert.
