Record of Death
« on: Friday 13 August 10 12:25 BST (UK) »
My Gg grandfather was Henry McCroben, born Bradford around 1860's.  He married my gg grandmother in 1882 in Berwick upon Tweed.  In the 1891 census my gg grandmother was living in Newcastle and recorded as a widow.  However, my g grandmother's marriage certificate in 1901 does not show him as deceased.  I can find no further information about him or a death record at all and wonder whether he left my gg grandmother or did actually die.  I wonder if he could even have gone abroad!  I've tried several variations of the spelling and absolutely nothing.  I would be grateful for any advice.

Hi Roblin, welcome to RootsChat. First off just because Henry doesn't appear on your great grandmas marriage cert as deceased doesn't mean that he wasn't (the opposite is also true  ::))

Could you give a few names and dates and the 1891 census ref so that we can have a look and get the feel of the family as the few searches I've done aren't giving me much and what I am getting doesn't make a lot of sense without a bit more detail.

Thankyou.
The information I have is quite sparse but here goes:

Henry McCroben is the son of William Henry McCroben from Bradford who is the son of John McCroben b. around 1799.

Henry Married Sarah Jane Holmes (widow) nee Lyon in Berwick in 1882. My great grandmother, Florence McCroben was born in 1883 in Berwick.  By 1891 they are recorded as living in Newcastle upon Tyne and Sarah is recorded as a widow.  By the 1901 census Sarah had died and my great grandmother was married to William Anderson and lived in Byker.

I've dipped in and out of family research over the years but I can's any information or record of Henry apart from the marriage.  On his marriage certificate we is recorded as a commercial traveller.

I'm sorry I haven't any further info to go on at present but appreciate you trying to help me.  Many thanks

Ah, well that's the first point of confusion as FreeBMD shows the marriage as being between Henry and Louisa Jane Holmes, not Sarah.

Ok, in 1871 the McCrobens are here RG10 piece 4467 folio 103 page 34, still can't find Florence in 1891 but have her after her marriage ( there's a Henry McCroban b DecQ1884 NewcastleT 10b page 154 dies SeptQ 1953 Newcastle 1b p140 same spelling)

Thank you.  That is my gg grandfather's son who died in 1953.  In 1901 when his mother had died he was in an industrial and ragged school.

McCroben is  a name ripe for mistranscription - McRoben, McRobbin, McRobin, MacRobyn etc.

I get the feeling you don't know exactly when he was born.  If you haven't found a birth registration for him it might be that McCroben isn't his real name or that he was known under another name.

Or of course he may have died other than in England.

According to the 1871 census Henry was 17 and there is a birth for a Henry McCroben  MarQ1854 Bradford Y 9b page 171 so now we have his birth and marriage.

Have you done a Google search for Henry? There are some other people looking for Henry and there's a suggestion that the family changed their name to Robens but I still can't find him.
